Thats why amazons return policy is awesome! I'm returning the m50 instead of my pro700mk2's.

Haha, that's good to hear. I haven't given much thought to returning anything ever, not to say that I don't trust Royal Mail but ya never know. I'm currently sold on the XB500's so any objections do raise them now.

I'll look to Pro700mk2/Pioneer HDJ-500/hfi-580 in the future but for 40/50 quid I can't seem to find a fault with the Sony's, look comfy as fack and seem to have a good bass response from reviews.

I'd love to test em out, as much as I love shopping online for some things there ain't nothin quite like tryin em in the shop. Payin for an arranging refunds via amazon seems like a bit of a hassle! I'd rather go some shops, London, Midlands I ain't really bothered, both are just as easy enough for me to get to so get back to me if you know some good shops that stock these kinda cans for tests.

I recently got the Beyer DT990 PRO's which I love but I carnt compare to any other cans mentioned here as I havnt heard them enough. I came from a Goldring DR150 which is kinda Grado like in sound so the DT990 bass to me is great.

With reguards to trying headphones in the UK there is hardly anywhere on the highstreet. John Lewis has some but HMV have the biggest selection and also had a Denon 2000 in my local one which can act as a referance point to the other cans as its pretty popular on here.

Richer Sounds and Superfi may be able to do auditions but dont carry all the brands of headphones. Hifiheadphones allow you to audition cans over the value of £100 at their offices but its probally too far to go to only audition one set of cans but they have the best selection and have a good returns policy it seems but they can be a bit more than amazon. Dolphin Music could be worth a try too or DV247 have a few shops thoughout the country.

Ultrasone are pretty expensive (over here as normal) but we can get the Ultrasone 20th Anniversary headphone which is just a rebadged Ultrasone PRO 650 for ~£120 from Thomman UK. They are based in Germany so I dont think theres any duty on them as its inside the EU but just double check.

Hope somthing in that wall of text was helpful.

Sony XB500, V-Moda Crossfade LP2, Audio Technica PRO700MK2 have roughly the same amount of bass. I haven't tried PRO700MK2 but I wasn't a huge fan of the LP2, the highs were quite recessed (slightly more than XB500!) while mids were slightly more forward than on XB500 it was very unevenly so. I think the LP2 did even have slightly stronger impact/punch in the midbass compared to XB500 but slightly less in the subbass. If XB500 costs like 40 EUR and LP2 like 170 EUR, the LP2 is more worth like 60 EUR to me max soundwise but it had awesome build quality though.

My current basshead can of choice are the M-Audio Q40, not quite as bassy as the bassmonsters mentioned above but close (~11dB peak in bass vs ~15dB and 11dB is still more than what graphs for Beats Studios show for example) but the mids and highs are very even and neutral and crisp sounding (doesn't need any EQing) compared to the above headphones so it handles anything I throw at it nicely.

Get the Sony XB500. All the others you listed are around £90 - 140, so maybe wait until you can try them and you have more money. Play.com have the XB500 for £39.99 with free shipping. I think I might pick a pair up myself at that price. If you try looking for a better price (and I don't believe there is) and you come across eeepcssd.com, avoid like the plague. They are based in China, so you would end up paying duty and VAT and they will more than likely be fakes.

Well if you EQ the XB500 a little they will sound very good for the price without doubt, I use these kind of settings for my XB500:

kX Audio EQ

Realtek HD onboard EQ:

iTunes:

For me they go from aprox 50~$70 worth basshead headphones to like ~$120 or so worth pair of headphones.

I went through this recently.  And I can say 2 things for certain:

1 - It's difficult to impossible to be able to 'audition' every option

2 - At a certain point, after reading and reading and reading.....you just gotta BUY something!  Try it out for a bit!  And return it if it doesnt cut it.....

I was looking for EDM cans,.....and was in LOVE with my wifes Beat's.  My mind couldnt conceive how other cans could sound better, or have more bass...

I was wrong.

HFI 580's driven via a FiiO dac/amp.   Completely destroy the beats.  Bass is way deeper, much more seperation between low and mid-low bass.  You get the hard short punch as well as the deep cavernous bass......oh, and unlike the beats, the rest of the range is great as well.  Much more defined, crisp, and seperated high's than the beats.

Good luck!

The Sennheisers HD408 have plenty of bass, in my opinion just as much as the Beats Studio and only cost a 1/5 of the price.

Those HD408 looks to have same design as the HD212 Pro I have except being open/semi open design. I wonder if HD408 also has a boomy bass, recessed midrange, slightly exaggerrated highs lacking smoothness and resolution and sounds almost distorted like "scratching glass" and metallic and overall sound is quite thin due to the recessed midrange. In short I think HD212 pro is very lacking that doesn't sound natural whatsoever, probably the least natural sounding headphone I've heard so far but one thing it did great, it worked suprisingly well as a gaming headphone despite it didn't sound accurate at all haha, the positioning was great.
