Picking up new headphones

Thread Starter

I recently aquired a ASUS xonar essence stx soundcard and it improved my sound quality by miles!

However up to now I have been using Senn's PC350's wich do not have the best sound to them and since I haven't used the microphone on them in about a month I was thinking about getting a proper, entry level, audiophile quality pair of headphones.

The question is: I have read very good reviews about senn's HD558 and HD598(wich are at the very top end of my budget for the time beeing) and I was wondering if the 598s were worth the extra money considering the modded 558s (according to what i read) have a pretty damn close sound quality. So, Aesthetics aside, is the upgrade worth my 60 or so Can$.

On a sidenote, the reason I am looking at sennheiser headphones is simply because i have been satisfied with my 350's up to now, if there is another option that is flat out a better bang for my buck that someone else could suggest i would appreciate it a lot since my knowledge about headphones is very limited.

Thank you,

Shukk

Sidenote: please be forgiving about my english I don't get to speak it very often and it is not my native language

Parlez-vous francais?

Anyway,

Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250-Ohm,

more for someone who wants bass & treble.

V-Moda M80 which are my new $200 and under favorite.  The sound upfront, very even from sub-bass up through the start of the treble.  They sound even better amped.  They are sealed, on-ear, very comfortable headphones.  They are also built like tanks so they will last.

For $50 more you can personalized the ear cup covers with your own logo which is pretty sweet.

Here is Tyll's take on them:

I have always been a fan of AKG headphones.  For build quality and neutrality in the signature I would not hesitate going with a random set of AKG headphones.  Not all are going to be winners, but almost every set I have tried from them has impressed me in some way or another.
