The Senn HD650 often comes down in price to $350 on Amazon, and they are (used) for sale around here lots, so they might be worth looking into as well.

Source first. This is why I recommend HM-602 > Grado SR60 (or SR80) combo. It is just a little over your budget, closer to $500. If you do not need to play from laptop to USB, then get HM-601 and save money for some higher Grado model. Or just save the money. Grado (or Alessandro) are nice headphones for your music prefs. And I yet to meet better source for the money other than HM-602/601 with their NOS DACs. Their amps have tube-alike warmth which is must for the Grado.

Wait is that an alternative to my iPod? or just another amp alternative?
Thinking portably (is that even a word?), your best bets are the Audinst, D1, and O2. The Audinst is available through Ebay. As far as headphones are concerned, I would read reviews on all of them and weigh out what you may like. Heck, if you live in a bigger area, see if any other user with them lives around you, and maybe ask for a demo sometime.
Also take in mind, a lot of headphones are very hyped (DT880, D2000), underhyped (HD600,V6), and negatively hyped (DT990, SR60i) depending on the user. Don't let that sway you. Your ears are different than everybody elses, and if you like neutral, go neutral. If you like bassy, go for it, and same goes for treble. There's something here for all of us, you just gotta find your flavor :)
This is some of the most honest, open, and helpful advice you'll ever receive around here. Well done!

Awesome, thanks, I'll check out some of the reviews. And is there a difference between bassy and just crisper low end?
Thankya thankya :P I think so many people get so caught up in what they think "good sound" is, that they get.........jaded I guess would be the word? Actually, bitter is a better word.
If it helps you any jsilbert, I started with Grados. Loved them, I honestly say they are some of the best headphones to get if you like modding (the T50RP people will give me weird looks for that, but whatever). I bought woodies for them, modded them to my hearts content, but couldn't find everything I wanted.
So I took a gamble, and bought the DT990's from another user here. Sure, they're bassier than the 880's. Sure, the midrange isn't the focus here, it's all about the V curve. But you know what? I've never enjoyed a headphone more. So much actually, I built a Bottlehead Crack for them. They are bassy, but cover almost every genre in a way I like. I am trading another pair of headphones for a pair of HD600's to fill those areas that the DT990 struggles with. The K702 did that perfectly, but I listen to too much electronica and stuff to justify them :P
You'll also hear lots of talk about amp/source making some CRAZY HUGE difference. They do, don't get me wrong (just got this D1 from an Audio GD NFB-12, and ab-so-lutely love it, through optical at least :P) But they will never ever ever change a headphone you don't like the sound of into one you do. It may pull more detail from your cans, making them more appealing the better amp/source you get (I know the HD6xx series is infamous for this, and I noticed a jump from solid state to tubes in my 990's), but if you aren't satisfied with what they present you, ignore the rave reviews and trade for something else. Lots of people do this, so you have options. It may take a few days, but it will come :)
/endrant
EDIT: Yeah, I would say so. You have depth (how deep the bass goes), punch (how much it kicks), and presence (how much bass there is). Some go really low, but don't have the amount of bass you crave (see: K702 for me). Some have punch and a high amount of bass, but no depth to speak of (see: Beats by Dre)
Oh, but one thing agreed upon around here. Don't get Beats.
I have the DT990s and love them. Usually, I like a slight V-shape eq curve. But, for recordings that require a touch more midrange emphasis, I grab my HD600s. I think I can enjoyably listen to all my music preferences with this can combo.

OK, so first off, I don't think I'm going to get into modding for a while...
Ok, so I'm not sure if I want a bass heavy sound... I'm a bass player, and I LOVE jazz. So really what I'm looking are headphones that have a very crisp sound, which can handle acoustic or fusion jazz, and that I can hear the bass clearly. So I don't know if that is depth or punch, but I don't necessarily want WOMP WOMP music where the bass takes over, but I definitely don't want a trebly rock sound, and I know I want to hear the bass. So maybe the Senns with one of those amps you suggested?
EDIT: I do definitely listen to a little bit of electronic music tho, so options are best... which is why I think the Senns are looking good because I can have a flat sound to work with and then shape the sound on my own with the eq's on my devices. Does that sound good?
The Senn HD600s have more bass than most people give them credit. It's not a bass head headphone, but the bass is very nice. It blends seamlessly with the midrange.
Ok, so these are looking perfect so far. What is the difference between HD600's and HD650's?
I've never heard the 650s, so I'm only going on what I've read. The 650s have more bass and more of a high end roll off. The 600s are more neutral and flat throughout the frequency range. The high end is more clear and present on the 600s. The mids are a little more pronounced on the 600s. However, the 600 and 650 are more alike than they are different.

So it looks like go with the cheaper of the two...
And does anyone have a specific amp recommendation for the Senns? Either which go best with these phones based on the ones already suggested, or maybe some different suggestions.
