Looking for advice for new portable setup

Hi there!

First I got to say... this is my first post here... hello there :)

A while ago (I think it was 2 years ago) I spent a lot of time in this forum reading and now I'm back and decided to start a threat to get some input for my new portable rig after my sansa clip broke some weeks ago. Westone 3s were the in-ears i used with it.

I'm mainly looking for a new source but maybe also new phones/amp.

Sooo... my criterias are as follows:

- will mainly be used for the gym... so should be quiet portable

- i prefer a very detailed sound and a rather flat frequency balance.... but if i had to choose i'd prefer a more warm/laid back sound than a too brilliant/harsh one

- musical preferences are mostly modern metal / core centered genres and some alternative rock... nearly always something involving guitars

- in ears or earbuds

- i haven't set myself a price limit... it should be reasonable... i don't want to add a lot of money to get a 1% increase in overall sound quality but should definitely be higher quality stuff

I already thought about getting a new sansa clip / clip+ but wanted to get some other recommendations... maybe something that is a step above the clip and maybe some advice on earbuds/in ears.

I also don't know if an amp is worth considering... the whole setup shouldn't be that heavy... don't want to lose my pants while working out ;) maybe if "sq gain per weight ratio" is high enough :)

I hope my english isn't too bad... I'm not a native speaker.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Paul

Personally if it was me.

Sansa fuze

Line out

Fiio E11

Yamaha EPH-100

A cracking setup, for not an awful lot of money. The yamahas are an all metal body, fit and isolate very well, and love guitars.

I have the same, but with a P4 warbler amp which is a bit weighty for the gym really.

thank you for your input!

i forgot to mention that i own an RSA predator... and as i stated in the openig post a pair of westone 3s... so... i don't know if your recommendation is (that big of) an upgrade...

is it worth spending the extra money on some expensive stuff like hm 801/colorfly etc + custom in ears? or is that step mainly a lot of money for a "small" upgrade compared to something like fuze -> predator -> w3? i do have the money.. but am also planning to upgrade my home rig... :>

The highend custom IEMs like JH13Pro/JH16PRO, ES5, UM Miracle are big improvement over W3 in term of soundquality and if add AMPs/DAC in chain then they greatly improve and can replace many fullsize headphones desktop setups. But for gym use i will recommend to try DAPs like Nationite N2, HSA Studio V, Sony X1060, S:Flo2 with W3 and also can add small AMPs like Pico Slim, RSA Mustang P51, iBasso T5.
