Need a little help with MDRV6 mods

So here's a few things I want to do with my V6;

- Remove the static shock
- Make the headphones easier to drive/louder
- Make the bass have a little more quantity or impact (something to freshen up the bass) without hurting anything else of the sound signature, including the highs.
- More isolation

Anyone achieved any of these? Anyone got any ideas? I wanna know! :D

Have you tried the velour pad upgrade?  That's the first thing anyone with a V6 should do.  It's so common, that one store actually sells them that way as a package:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/677534-REG/Sony_MDR_V6_Studio_Headphones_with.html

They sell the Pearstone pads separately, too.

The original mod used Beyerdynamic DT-250 velour pads, but they don't come with the foam liner that's used to cover the drivers.  The Pearstone pads above come with the foam liner.  Just take the pleather pads off and pop them on!  Depending on your ears, you may even get a better seal - not because the velour seals better than pleather (it doesn't), but because the velour pads are bigger and create a larger cavity around your ears.

What if i get the pads and it turns out my ears arent the kind of ears that have it with good isolation with these pads? Then I kinda wasted my money xD Can anyone attest to the better isolation seeing as you just said that it isolates worse? Which i dont want?

To remove the static shock:

First of all, static shock in a headphone possibly means that it is faulty and you should return it. If this is not possible, you could try to recable the headphone or to put some anti-static tape on that metal ring around the drivers.

To make the headphones easier to drive/louder:

There is nothing you can do here. Get a headphone amp. BTW these headphones are pretty loud as it is.

To make the bass have a little more quantity or impact:
1.Beyer pads improve bass, add a bit quantity and impact.

2.Adding some additional foam in between the ear and the driver (or some cotton) should subtly reduce the treble and high mids. This will give the bass more quantity and impact and might also solve your static issue since cotton is a good insulator.

To improve isolation:

Can't think of any way to improve isolation on these. Perhaps try to tape the pads onto the enclosures using soundproofing tape?

The static shock is actually a common problem with the V6s if you search the forums. I'll look the tape, but will that mess with the magnet and the electricity or sound of the driver?

Yeah I was thinking the amp was all I could do, but my E6 is REALLLLLY touchy on the wire and cuts out and gets all screwy.. I guess isolation is my best bet next to upping the sound seeing as I wont have to drain outside noises out... Plus its usually easier.

Is there anyway to improve bass without sacrificing the highs and the mids? For the static problem, could I just put an EXTREMELY small layer of cotton to solve the static, but so that it wont affect the sound, or will even the slightest amount effect the sound noticeably?

I dont mind the headphones leaking, it's that i dont want other sounds leaking it.

B&H sells a soundproofed version of the 7506 , however it is very expensive!

Hmm, the MDR-7506 I used to own never had that static issue...

The cotton affects the sound in an extremely subtle way, you'll probably find it hard to notice it at first.

There is only so much you can achieve with mods and this can... In the end, if you want more isolation, better bass, more comfort etc., you should get a different headphone :)

I never said anything about the comfort?

I just want a few little subtle changes, yaknow? If I get a diff headphone I might lose out on all the good points of the V6 I cant live without.

As for the static issue, if you search for it, you'll find lots of threads about it.

And I dont want a big boomy bass addition, just a touch more, nothing big at all. Would the cotton ALSO aid in the without damaging the highs or mids as well as solving the static problem?

Also, does anyone know how those high isolation 7506s were modded to get high isolation? ;o

Read the reviews of it on the B&H page. They claim it is fluid filled, like the headphones used on airplanes.

I put the Beyerdynamic velour pads on my 7506s and it does make a big difference in comfort and isolation IMO.  tomb is right about the lack of a replacement foam liner, but I was able to sort of re-use the OEM liners with a little delicate wedging...

I found them to be pretty comfortable before - now they're 14-hour-flight-to-Shanghai comfortable.  L3000.gif

I may still have to try those Pearstone pads as well just for jollies - sound like a much "cleaner" fitment.
