Here's the irony.  Before the waitress came over I fairly loudly asked if anyone was watching this one t.v. and if they minded if I shut it off.  There was another identical tv at the other end of the room, which i could actually hear the noise from as well afterwards, but it was acceptable being further away.  But people could watch that one anyway.  So there was one older man a booth down and across from us that waited for the next waitress to come by and told her to turn the t.v. back on.  When I hear the awful noise I looked up and he was making a NASTY face at me for having it shut off before.  So, I was thinking "why didn't you just speak up before when I asked everyone first".  I proceeded to tell him "sorry, it is making a really loud high pitched noise that is bothering my ears".  He didn't say anything, so I pointed to my ears and made a face like it was bothering me.  Then, I'm not sure if this was taken as an insult or what, but he pointed to his ears and then pointed to the tv as well and I could just glimpse he had a hearing aid in.

 

So, I gave up.  Then I had an epiphany!  I had my in-ear headphones in my pocket!!!  I stuck them in my ears, with no music playing, as earplugs.  I STILL heard the noise the whole time, but it was cut in half and much more acceptable.  People probably thought I was rude listening to music with my wife or date. ha.  She didn't mind though.  She heard it but much less than I did.

 

Anyway, I just thought that was funny and sort of relevant.  IEMs can make good earplugs when you need some! :-)

 

lol same story with me. Could hear the noise from the TVs. High pitched noise. Very annoying. Even my own personal TV (Sony Trinitron 27 inch) would make this really loud noise when turned on. I'd have to turn the volume quite loud to drown out the damn noise the TV made :P. It's quite funny that most people don't notice the noise that these older TVs made. That's the wold of noise-pollution for ya and the damage it inflicts on peoples ears everyday ;).

The high pitched noise from old CRT TVs is most likely at the horizontal (line) frequency, 15625 Hz for PAL, or 15734 Hz for NTSC. This frequency can also appear as a low level interference in nearby audio equipment (recorded on tapes, etc.).

Yea, that sounds about right.  Almost in the range of the "mosquito tone" which is 17khz.  Basically obnoxious when in sine wave form. haha

Really? Those test tones are sampled at 44.1 kHz, so if you can hear the 22 kHz tone there's probably some bad resampling going on..

I can hear the 15K barely, and I cannot hear the 16, but my ears FEEL something, like pressure.

 

Interesting.

 

Not trying higher than 16K.

 

Then again, I am at work with open cans (DT-990) and there is a white noise generator in the background like most cubical farms have, so this isn't a great test environment :D

Male 44 - can hear the 15 easily, 17 and 17.4 are only detectable if I turn the volume up pretty far..2oclock (using speakers, not cans).  18, nothing....

The 21 and 22 alias hideously in my sound card on my PC....very audible, but not in the 20khz+ region.

I did not hear above 19Khz with what the OP provided, but I did hear up to 23Khz with a sine wave generator soooooooooooo idk. I know I have been tested up to 22Khz for the heck of it. I polled yes just because according to other sources, I can.

That stinks.  I would be hesitant to trust the test if your sound card isn't properly emitting the tones.  You really need everything to be fully capable of the frequencies to know if you can in fact hear them.  Otherwise, you might be able to and not even know it. :-P

Yeah, I saw the audiologist within the last year and he actually said I had some of the best hearing he had ever seen.  He was shocked that I could detect incredibly quiet and minute volume changes.  As a musician I was trying not to get all giddy in the office smiling. haha.  I was thinking "all riiiiiight!!!" hahaha :-P

It seems that I can barely only hear up to 20kHz. I'm sure that the normal human ear can only hear up to 20-20,000Hz.



However, from an application from Android that reproduces the wave 20 kHz, I could easily hear the frequency well enough with headphones. I'm a bit confused here.
