Higher end version of DT880?

The DT880 had a great bass and treble response to my ears, but many said the mids were recessed.

I actually liked that sound signature - so in the new generation of high-end headphones (HD800, LCD2/3, HE-6, T1...etc...) is there anything that approximates the sound of the DT880, but does it... better?

I hear ya buddy. You want the T1.. Sennheiser's headphones are different to the Beyers. If you like Beyer headphones, I guess you got to stick with Beyers.

Having owned the DT880s, and now the HD600s, I can say the HD600s are more neutral sounding with better mids than the DT880s. Don't forget about this timeless beauty in the light of the more sexy new offerings.

Of these, the HD800 and the T1 are perhaps somewhat similar (obviously, especially the latter, since it is built similarly, but has the newer Tesla drivers). The others are likely quite different.

I agree, the DT880 is somewhat tamer (less neutral, but smoother sounding).

Really?  I feel the 600s are smoother and a little more laid back.  To me, the music is more fluid and enjoyable.  The 880s were to clinical for me.  But, this is my ears and we all hear things a little differently.

most of the reviews I've read say that the T1 is, if anything, mid forward, and that it sounds completely different to the DT880(!)

+1 for T1.

The HE-500 actually is quite similar too in terms of general frequency response, but the planar magnetic sound is very different to dynamic.

Oh, it's the opposite for me. The HD600 is cold and harsh (depends on the original recording) while the DT880 to me is a lot smoother and a little more laid back. And by the way, the Premium 600 Ohm is a more enjoyable can than the Pro version.

I did have the 2005 (250 ohm) version of the 880s, so that might have something to do with it.

What about the HE-6 (if you or anyone else has heard it) - is that further away or closer than the HE-500 is to the DT880 (in terms of frequency response/sound signature)?

The Pro or the Premiums? Because I've auditioned the Premium 250 Ohms and imo they're not that different from its big brother. The 600 Ohm version probably have tighter bass but that's about it.

Hifiman HE-4. Like a super charged DT880/DT990 hybrid, assuming you can't afford the T1. Though their amping requirements are significantly higher than any of the Premium Beyers.

They weren't the pros.  They were simply referred to as the 2005 version.  250 ohm.  All gray and silver with a straight cord.  Decent cans, but analytical to the point of sucking the life out of the music I like.

The T1 is designed to have the same sound signature as the DT880, but better. Look at this:

http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=2751&graphID[]=2033

What this means is that the T1 will sound better but won't have any more mids than the DT880. They essentially sound exactly the same but the T1 is more efficient.
