Removing the "port-ring" design a good idea for M-Audio Q40?

The M-Audio Q40 has like a foam-ring glued onto the drivercasing around the outer circumference of the drivers which by the description I've seen by other headphone manufacturers is to increase bass response as the sound is directed more straight towards the ear. At the same time I keep wondering, doesn't this hurt soundstage a bit too? Surely the soundstage must be better if the sound can travel more towards the sides of the cup/pads before entering the ear channel right as this ring crams the space the sound can travel. 

 

What do you guys reckon?

Heya,

 

I haven't pulled it off since it's glued. When I did the pad swap, it was the first thing I looked at. Wondered why that ring was there and went to tug on it, but it didn't come up since it's glued. Didn't force it. Might have to scalp it.

It seems to be there to increase bass response. Check JVC and "ringport" design...

 

For me they don't bother me at all when I put extra padding underneath the pads to make it deeper and then they don't touch my ears. I'm just personally slightly interested if it would possibly increase the soundstage somewhat if removing it. However since I love the sound of them so much with the deepened cup mod I'm not gonna take the chances as I love how it sounds like like this and perhaps I'd ruin the bassresponse that I love so much about these. :P
