Having just been through the pain of trying to find a large capacity (>100Gb) player with high quality sound, I'd like to share my thoughts and findings for those needing the same type of device. My shootout is here and includes comparisons of the iPod Video 80Gb, the iPod Classic 160Gb, Cowon J3 and Cowon X7. I hope it helps.

excellent comparison!

i just bought anx7 and like it very much.  so far i have used it with gr8, gr10, re-0, ie-8, and older denon 700.  i even tried the lcd-2 just for yucks- it drove them but was anemic!

the screen is good, but does wash out in sunlight.  the menus and interface are good enough to get where i need to go, and i do not have to bog down any o my windows machines with iTunes (which is, in my opinion, bloatware on a pc).  add music by drag and drop - my pc sees it as a drive.  i have not tried to see if it will synch via jriver yet- but if anyone has the skinny on this, please let me know

the sound is very good, and shows the differences between my iems, and the eq settings are quite good (high praise from a hard-core high-end audiophile like me).  i also have a fuze and an 801 -

Highly recommended.

Thanks for the extra perspective, fzman.

I don't suppose you've found a way to make playlists work have you?

The best way is to install Kizune's custom flash interface

Will that allow syncing of playlists from MediaMonkey or just creation of playlists on the X7 itself?

EDIT since i didnt said it as i should:

You can past playlists to the X7 with some limitations same as  J3,  here is the answer from a member in ABI.

Basicaly you have some good options imo. Especially if you only want simple playlists for sports or parties.

Regarding kizune's interface it doesnt change the facts i mentioned above but it allows you to create playlists on the go. As far as i know, these playlists are for the X7 only and cannot be passed to your laptop. Thats because the custom UCI uses the favorite function the player has to create "playlists" which can be saved and renamed.

I voted for the iPod mainly because of the widespread compatibility, nowadays nearly everything has an iPod dock.

Where, oh where are the 200+ gb players we should have had years ago?!

I agree. I've kept the iPod and the X7. I'll use the pod on docking stations etc. Where the HPO quality doesn't matter and keep X7 for mobile listening awesomeness.

apologies for hijacking your thread Loquah!

is it a good time to buy a iPod classic(2009 160gb model)?

because I observed that the stock level of the classic is gradually decreasing @ both online and b&m retailers(both colors).

the price is also been reduced to 235(from 259)!

so either:

               1) iPod classic is being discontinued

               2) A new model is gonna be introduced soon.

I'm eyeing the classic because I need the storage space. so I don't want to miss out if it suddenly gets discontinued or buy it now and then cry my eyes out when a new version gets released the next day.

so what's your take guys? much appreciate your opinions!!

No worries, Bravo.

I can't comment on new models, etc. but I do know that the price is good for the Classic right now and I see you already have an E11 so I'd go for the Classic and use the money you save on the reduced price to buy an E9 line-out to connect to your E11. The Classic + E11 combo is really nice. I've played with it for about a week now and while the sound's not quite as spacious and detailed as something like a Cowon, it's still really enjoyable.
