AKG K81DJ VS Audio-Technica ATH-T44

Hello every1. I need a little help. Since my planed purchase failed and I don't want 2 wait 4 a new shipment and deal with that store ever again [since it took them 6 days 2 tell me that they don't have that HP and give me my money back] I was thinking on getting some PORTABLE HP for iPod instead. Right know I am on a tight budget since I spent a lot yesterday on some cloths. So the AT M50 is out of the question.

So I don't like 2 bassy HP but I would not mind 1 since I am listening more Hip-Hop, DubStep, RnB lately [usually Rock, Alternative,...] and I'm sick of in-ear HP.

Btw I don't have a big head so the the K81DJ shouldn't be a problem but I would like them to be comfortable - I would mostly use a hoody over them. biggrin.gif

I didn't found much reviews of AT T44 so I would appreciate some feedback from the owners.

I know that K81DJ owners say that there are 2 tight and have tin and bad cord that tend 2 fail so if the AT T44 are more confy and not a total fail in terms od SQ I am willing 2 give them a go. Btw they are both 50 euros shipped. Thanx

P.S. Sorry 4 my bad english.

I have ownded the K81 and the headband is very tight. You can and need to loosen it up overnight on a set of books. They sound very boomy and dark. By removing the foam pads they sound less dark and bass becomes less muddy. I found them too bassy but after selling them I started to miss their sound a little. They sound great for bassy Rock and Roll.

I see that u got Superlux 668b and I have Samson SR850 that I LOVE. I would like 2 hear from u some comparison with K81DJ. SQ and comfort? Did you get AKG K 240 velour ear pads 4 668b and how do they compare vs K81DJ stock and with K240 velour pads. Thanx

The Superlux is a lot brighter. The K81 has a tighter headband and can be carried along a lot easier and smaller then the Superlux.

The K81 also isolates better. Bass is the biggest difference. The Superlux is bright and the K81 is warm to dark. The SQ of the Superlux is better, but the sound of the K81 is more fun and with the foam inserts removed from the pads, they sound quite good for what they cost. Comfort for the Superlux is good t very good, only the pads can become warm on your ears, even after less then an hour. If you stretched the K81's headband, they can be vey comfortable. More so than the Superlux. I haven't swapped earpads, so I cannot comment on that.

If you like some hmmmmpf in your music and listen to some Rock, Hip Hop or anything that likes some extra bass emphasis, the K81 is excellent.

The Superlux is more for acoustic, folk, rock to some extent but than it's details that win you over and overall SQ instead of bass (quantity).
I would rate Superlux SQ a high 8 and bass a low 5, K81 a low 7 for SQ, when foam inserts are removed, and a low 9 for bass (rating includes quality and quantity, more like bass feeling overall).

Thanks a lot! Yeah I will prob get K81 for portable use. I just need 2 wait and c if they get some more of something else that I planed getting in a few days [and if I get money 4 it] , if not I will get K81.

I like the way they look and that they are smaller and not so bulky [Just wish that I can get them in all black or any other color 518LE?]. I would never think of using SR850 as portables. :D I love SR850's details and sound stage and I prefer more lade back and neutral sounding HP 'cause fatigue and headache is an issue 4 me. BUT I would like 2 try the opposite 4 a change especially since I started listening more bass heavy music when I'm on the go. Thanx again. ;)

Btw I plan getting AKG K 240 velour ear pads 4 SR850 and maybe even Superlux 681 and give them a go since they are so cheap [19 euros]. Worst case scenario I can use them as back up HP and even play with them a little [try out different mods]. Cheers

Good for you! The K420 are great. However the connector plug is the same as on the K81/K581 which means that it can break. Just be a bit careful and you'll enjoy your new headphones!

Thanks 4 the info. I read the K420 and K430 topics and decided that the k420 are the way 2 go. I'll prob recable them after some abuse if I feel need 4 it ;) I heard some horror story's about K81/518 cable. Weak, tin, melts on hot sun. LOL

The cable of the K420 seems to be harder and more durable than on the K81/K518. I think it is made from steel/copper instead of just copper, at least mine is like that. I bought it about 3 years ago. But the connector plug is the same as on the K81/K518...

That's good to hear. Also that they lasted you for 3 years. Cheers wink_face.gif

Well, I am careful when I use them and also I don't use them that often any more since my collection of headphones is quite big now. But before I started collecting other headphones, I used the K420 a few times a week for about 2 years. It seems like the connector plug is the weak link, so that's what you have to be careful with.
