Are the XB1000s genuinely good?

I've been using the XB500s for quite a while now as a lot of other electronic lovers on a budget have been doing, lately I've gotten a bit of a bonus and want to treat myself to a new pair.
The XB1000s look right up my street, comfortable and good looking, however there isn't a whole lot of feedback.

My budget is no more than the 1000s and Ill be using the onboard sound on my motherboard with no amp.

I wouldn't think the XB1000 fares well straight from onboard sound unamped.

Likely given that source, as others have said, the 700 might be a better upgrade than the 1000. From a strong amp, I vastly prefer the 1000.

I didn't think the XB1000 was worth the price over the XB700 regardless of what I plugged it in to.

I have a Xonar DG sound card which I can use, goes up to I believe 64ohms:

With that should I get the XB1000s after all? I wouldn't mind getting the 700's but I feel it may be too small of an upgrade from me 500s.

How much ohms would I need do you think? This Xonar DG puts out 64 I believe, it says >64 but doesn't give a solid number as to how much.

All I noticed when using the amp on my XB500s is the volume just increased, maybe I'm missing something haha.

I just had a quick look at the website and it says 24ohms under the XB1000 technical specifications, is this correct? If so my Xonar DG should power it it's best, or am I wrong?

Because the XB1000 are so low ohms, it is important to plug them into an amp with a very low output impedence. They sound pretty good out of my custom dac/amp (1 ohm output) and my O2, but are not good out of any of my amps with a higher impedence output.

I would assume Xoinar DG to "handle" XB1000 quite well but it's not a question about bringing enough volume but to sound great, I wouldn't be suprised if XB1000 scales well with amps that provide lots of power at low impedance being a headphone using 70mm drivers. Even having said that XB1000 won't necessarily sound better for you, just as XB700 doesn't sound better than XB500 to some people.

I think I'll give them a shot, later on I can get a better amp (maybe an E9 without the E7 DAC?).

The DT770's are also in my price range but I'm unsure, the smallest OHM version is the 80 and I have nothing to power them that high, but to be fair the FiiO E10 + the DT770 Pro's are the same price as the XB1000s by themselves.

 

Any suggestions?

Yes, XB1000 is a very efficient headphone, but they really shine with a good amp. Unfortunately many people drive them with a mp3 player or a smartphone.

I can get the FiiO E10 DAC/AMP combo a couple weeks after I buy the XB1000s without an issue which I hope would let them really shine so that's not much of an issue, it's really just choosing between the DT770s that I've been recommended and the 1000s.

And there are a lot of versions of the DT770s which confuses me immsensely, DT770 Pro, DT770 premium, DT770 M, then there's the 80, 250 and 600ohm versions, I'm way out of my league, haha.

If you wand maximum bass, get the Pro 80.
Don't get the M version.
Either the 32 or 250 premium should run nicely with most amps
The 600 I would only recommend if you have either a very strong low-impedance SS amp or tubes. In other words, they aren't as good an entry point into the line.

Any of the DT770 line is going to sound very bright compared to the mellow XB1000--it's really going to be a point of preference.
