They each have their own unique sound, so your preference out of them will help determine your preferred sound signature. Go for it!

I found these A-T  ath a55's online. It seems like its a discontinued model. But it has almost identical specs to the ath a500/a700. Are they basically the same thing or do they differ quite a bit? And also, a relative of mine bought the ath t400. He says that spending more than $50 on headphones are not worth it. I have yet to spend more than $50 on hp's. If i spend $100 on the ath a55's, are they actually going to be two times better than the ath a55's? I just don't want to spend double the money and get tiny bit better sound.

Your top 4 brings back memories of dissatisfaction when I was influenced by the well known Cnet review praising the Senn HD 280 . I thought they were going to be such great cans, but I ended up personally disappointed with their sound. I wish I knew about Head Fi back then. Personally I recommend the m50's.

Ya the 280's were not that impressive. Fortunately, the local GC had them and they let me try them out. That's when they went to the bottom of the list. I've spent so long researching and shopping around for headphones that i just got sick or it and bought the m50's. I haven't listened to them yet so i hope they are pretty awesome. And they probably will be cause i'm upgrading from a hd202.
