The E9 is perfectly usable with high impedance headphones. It might not be the best amplifier available, but it has no problems specifically related to driving a 250 Ohm load.

Has no problem pumping volume out of anything from memory smile.gif

 T1, Beyer DT-990/600-ohm, HD800, HD650, HD600, LCD-2 ~ loads of volume on low gain before

1 o clock on the volume dial.

How it sounds though, that's a different matter!

imo xb500 vs xb700 is preference based, the xb700 has better sound quality, but to me i hate the sound of the xb700, I prefer the xb500 sound. The lp2's sound nice, but muddyish, similar to the skullcandy aviators, but more bass impact, and less clean. The m-100 should come out soon, and those seem interesting. The D1100 I'm sure will work for anyone who loves bass (considering getting one myself), however if your just after bass get the pro700mkii.

Sorry if that wasn't helpful, kinda just describing your choices.

The Pro700mk2 sounds really midrangey to me, but the Allen&Heath Xone: XD-53 has a really rumbly low bass with scooped out midrange.  It doesn't work well with my iPod touch (distorts), but it sounds great with all my other gear.

That's funny cuz I keep reading so many different opinions about that, some says it's very recessed sounding, more than M50 for example. I wonder if some people are saying it's recessed only cuz the mids aren't ultra crisp sounding which would be due to the hugely boosted bass response. Would be nice to at least get an accurate view on whether mids or highs are higher elevated on pro700mk2 or if it they are roughly on the same level.

There is a good bass response, as many people say, but the midrange is incredibly loud.  Overall, there is good extension into the bass and treble registers, but I mainly hear a midrange blast - more low midrange than boomin bass.

Comparison of HFI-580 and Pro 700 MK2, in my sig :)

Sounds like a good thing to me, I love especially a good presence of low mids, 500~1kHz especially. Is what makes the headphone sound "full" as opposed to thin which I don't like at all. The reason I haven't had this headphone on the interest list is how some people have said the mids are very recessed and it's a V-shape sounding heaphone with more recessed mids than M50 which would be the opposite what I want. OK I do want more bass than M50 but not less forward mids (OK everything's relative but I'm more interested in how the mids & highs compare to each other than how bass compares to the rest) and definitely not more exaggerated highs.

I've read that thread before; it's a good set of reviews.  I can understand what people are talking about when describing the bass of the Pro700mk2, since it does vibrate pretty well.  It's just that the treble isn't scooped out like it is with the Xone53.  The Pro700mk2 sounds a lot louder overall because all frequencies seem to be exaggerated at the same time.  That's just how I hear it.

Thread Starter

Probably should've posted an update here earlier but anyway after reading a couple of threads i decided to get the HFi 580s. I was really afraid i would not like them(something similar happened to me when i bought Image S4s after posting here on Head-Fi, most of the people said they were exactly what i was looking for  but i was really disappointed when i got them) but i am glad to say that i absolutely love them and they were exactly what i was looking for. I tried out the LP and XB 500/700s and they were all to muddy for my choice. Finally it was down to the Beyers, Pro 700Mk 2s and the HFi 580s. after reading some threads that also compared between HFI 580s and the beyers i ended up ruling ou the beyers. Then based on Crinacle awesome comparison thread and another review thread of the Pro700 Mk2s, G3N3RAL KARL's I believe( he said that while the pro700 mk2s were great he currently prefers his LPs for music, and since i did not like the LPs at the store), i decided to get the HFi 580s along with the Fiio E11(the ultrasones were surprisingly cheap, i had around 200$ to spend, so i decided to get a portable amp too). I must say i am incredibly impressed. THe bass on the HFis is just mind blowing. Especially if i use the bass EQ of the E11 the bass on can even kick the XB series' butt IMO. They were exactly what i was looking for in my new set of headphones. The only gripe i have is that the cable is too long for my use and i have to keep it tied up and it is not really convenient.

Just got the headphones. I have a Cowon j3 with the lows cranked up and so far the headphones seem to produce a very distorted bass and I have to raise volume in order for it to be equivalent to my earsonics sm3. My music is high quality and given the Rep of the headphones shouldn't they be able to support heavy bass? Or are my headphones defective?please any help will be great I'm kind of freaking out I spent a lot on these.

Also i plugged in the headphones into my korg triton, and no matter what volume i crank it up it sounds very amazing. Im just wondering if its the player.. even though its a cowon j3... I guess the best option would be to get an amp, im thinking PA2V2. Any suggestions? because at this point i dont know what to do.

Let them burn in; many people report distorted/boomy bass until they reach about 100 hours. I bought mine used so I can't say, but I did use them with a J3 myself and it sounded fine. I also used the J3 combo with a Go-Vibe V5 (very similar to the PA2V2), and the sound didn't improve much so I would advise against buying a portable amp. HFI-580's are pretty easy to drive.

Firstly, macro thank you for your reply. I highly doubt they are faulty because when I plugged them into my keyboard the sound was phenomenal. No matter how loud I made the keyboard the ultrasone 900s could withstand the bass and the sound in general. When I plug them into my cowon, not only is the sound lower in volume than my other earphones, I am forced to go into around the 32-34 volume and the sound gets significantly distorted especially the bass. I run them with a lot if lows turned on. And it scares me because headphones of this value should he able to interpret music at that level. So you honestly think its the burn in is what's necessary? Because these are supposed to be superior in bass yet so far ( with the exception of my keyboard) the bass is absolutely horrid. Am I doing something wrong?
