Need to find a pair of Gaming/Music headphones.

Hi everybody. I'm a person interested in sound, not a complete audiophile, but my knowledge in headphones is wide I guess. I'm looking for a pair of new headphones, to replace my low end Sony MDR-XD100's. I'm a gamer, and go for hours at a time sometimes so comfort is important. I also listen to a lot of music. I should say gaming 60% and music 40%. I like bass, but I don't want it to be over powering. But I also don't want it to be weak like the AD700. My budget is in the sub 200 area. The headphones i consider are:

-Ultrasone PRO 550

-Audio Technica ATH-M50

-Shure SRH-840

-AKG K271 (I've read that these require amplificaton, so if thats nessecary, they are out of my list).

-Sony ZX700

-Denon AH-D1100

-Sony SA-1000

-Sony MDR-V6

I'd also look at Beyerdynamics, but I wont be able to buy an amp so that is why I didn't tend to go there. If there are any decent models of Beyerdynamics that don't require an amp, please tell them.

Thanks! tongue_smile.gif

The one's i bolded i would cross off the list. They are not bassy. I don't know much about the pro 550, but ultrasone is what you should be looking for right now. They are relatively comfortable(not Beyer ocmfortable) and have S-Logic which is great for games.

The aTH M50 is not as recommended as much anymore with ost recommending the HFI 580 over the ATH M50. the HFI 580 is also by ultrasone. it is $118 on B&H. The Ultrason'es have deep bass, vocals that are a bit recessed (S-Logic probably adds to the slight recession and slight velied sound u might heear) and great highs. the ATH M50's are slightly more comfortable but the tight bass and S-Logic and price of Ultrasone's should be more tantalizing for u.

When i first saw ur requrements i thought Beyer and Then ultrasone as my two recommendations. but yeah. u  r right. u would need an amp for them to really sound good at all and straight out of computer is horrid, especially for someoone like u who probably. doesn't know what is in there(no offense)

the HFI 580's i have heard cam be used with Beyer pads:) find video's. they r on their tight so i don't know if they will come off easy though.

any other questions?

First of all thanks for the reply, and I have beats audio on my hp (not a fan at all) which just adds bass to the whole soudn spectrum. I have IDT high definition audio codec, pretty regular. I've read almost everywhere that the pro 550 has very good sound stage, and better sound quality then the hfi 580, or even hfi 780. And btw if I were to get any hfi headphone, I would get the 780 because there is less bass. I want bass, but not like the xb-500 from sony. :D

Out of those choices I would suggest the Ultrasone-easily.

What about the AD900's? is better than the AD700's in every aspect.

I take it that you're only looking at closed headphones?  because in general, open phones are better for gaming due to having a larger soundstage.

Amorgan, they're out of my price range, and they leak sound as far as I've read. I'll be using them on my school bus so that is an issue. And Daniel i don't know if I should choose the hfi 580, 780 or the pro 550. Clear sound, good sound stage, good bass. Good bass as in not so much amount of bass, but good quality and clear bass.

Thanks!!

Yes, thats why i recommended the Ad900's.

But if you want closed, the Creative aurvana live is another good choice.

SRH840 has a lot of mid bass imo, not a punchy bass headphone, but the SRH840 isn't bass light.

You can try the DT770pro, good bass, but maybe too amphasized for you but good soudstage for games.

32 ohm versions are good with a computer.

If I get the CAL!, i might get a sound processor with it like the Mixamp, or the DSS. Another Idea that came to my mind was to buy a 90 dollar gaming headset and an IEM like the Klipsch Image One S4.

DVD Rey, many people say even tough they are 32 ohms, they need an amp. Are you sure?

I can't tell u anything about the Pro 550. it's not recommended often. don't know why.

The ultrasone 580. you want that one. It's bassy but it's differnt. it's clear and powerful and doesn't muddy anything up. The 780's graph was way too low for any bass lover or needer. Stick with the HFI 580's or Pro 550's.

Open one's again yes are good for soundstage, but u are limited in it's use.

I would again recommend the E17 along with the Pro 550 or HFI 580. your chip is not good at all. with the E17, you can bypass the internal DAC and also have an amp at home and portably.

I'm not a fan of anything Sony. Their V6's were the last audiophile headphones(with a reasonable price) the V6's have since been trumped by the 280 pro and SRH440 on Head-Fi.

The new XB1000 is sony's new entry into the audiophile realm. not perfect, but whatever.

Why can't you get an amp? Any headphones that are good will require one. with the HFI 580 and other headphones that are recommended in the below $150 range. i don't think An E11 or E17 will break the bank too much.

ehh whatever. as an audiophile i wouldn't really be happy with my HFI 580's without an amp. but as a normal person. you wouldn't be able to tell.

I've been a musician since i've been 8, and I play the drums, bass, and the guitar. So I have a trained ear. BTW, I won't be getting an amp since I go portable a lot. But I use my headphones on my head, not in my backpack so I don't need factors like folding up etc.
