ATH AD700 + PS3 + what AMP/DAC

Hi All,

My first post and new to Headphones, PS3 and only found out through this forum about AMPs/DACs.

I bought a PS3 to stream video to my TV then my wife bought me MW3 for Christmas and I am hooked.

She was getting annoyed with the sound and constant banging and me swearing so my search began, thinking it was a simple task.

I was not too impressed with the gaming headphones on offer I thought he build quality for the the price was poor.  I came across the Astro A40 and Mixamp and was originally going to go with that but the UK website did not take orders until the 9th January so I stumbled across this forum.

I took the advice from the forum and have just ordered Audio-Technica ATH AD700 - Headphones and I can't wait to get them.

So problem one sorted, now on to problem 2 - Surround sound in the headphones

Amplifiers and DACs.  The PS3 has an optical out and links well to the Astro Mixamp,  Is the mixamp a good buy or would you suggest something else?  I liked the look of the TubeMagic D1 DAC but can't find any one in the UK who sells it and to be honest I don't know if this is what I need.

Mixamp, please. Just don't even think about it. For the purpose of gaming, the Mixamp is a must have.

Thank you will do.

If you don't plan on attaching a mic, the Turtle Beach DSS2 is cheaper and will give you the same Dolby headphone processing as the Mixamp, though it lacks in features and versatility.

Hi Mad Lust Envy's, thank you for your advice.

My next problem (Problem 3) is to find a good mic.

I have PS3>optical cable>Victor SU-DH1 amp (discontinued)>ATH-A900 headphones.

I use the official ps3 bluetooth headset/mic and output it through my headphones via accessory settings on the PS3, hanging it off my shirt collar is fine.

The sound is far, far superior with optical cable to amp over plugging headphones into the tv. worth it.

Get something like astro mix amp.

or as madlustenvy wrote. there are all in one options like the turtle beach or the new sony http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Stereo-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B0053OLY9O/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_6

but as you have already ordered the ATH-AD700 you will need an optical cable/, mix amp and mic.

This is another option, a sony amp (just throw away the crappy headphones, my friend has this amp and likes it

if you also need portability and would like to join the audiophile world the E17 Alpen is a good choice. the mixamp i have heard good things from so that is probably what you should do i guess.

Hi all,

Just looked at the E17 and it looks good, can this be used with the Ps3?

The specs show - 2 Dock connector : Specialized dock for E9&L7. Why do u need a dock?

Thanks again

The Mixamp and AD700 is the combo that well known gaming headphone reviewers like MLG Steggy rave about. You're getting one of the best headphones that have terrific synergy with Dolby headphone, which the Mixamp provides. the E17 or typical headphone amps don't use DSPs like Dolby Headphone.

Thank you again you have been really helpful.

Just had to look up Digital Signal Processing (DSP), my assumption is that is because the PS3 uses optical out hence it uses a Digital Signal.

My other assumption is that headphones use analogue and the mixamp changes the signal from digital to analogue or is that what a DAC Digital-to-analog converter.

So is the mixeramp an AMP and DAC?

Any devices that takes a digital signal and outputs audio for headphones is a DAC. And the Mixamp is obviously an amp. So yes to both. It's not a very powerful amp in comparison to typical headphone amps, but the AD700s don't benefit pretty much at all from amping. 9 times out of 10, you will want what Dolby Headphone does for gaming.
