jazzy, atmospheric drum and bass - IEM's

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice, have been doing loads and loads of research, the more I read the more i get confused, This type of question has been asked many times...and though that this would be easy , but i am wrong.

as per the title, my music style is jazzy, atmospheric  drum and bass that is pro, produced by people like LTJ Bukem and others on Good Looking Records. The music is very detailed, from low, mid to high, at the low to mid their are many subtle sounds that makes the tune.

What I am looking for are some IEM that can show the detail and subtle changes in the low end which still allowing the mid's and top end though. Price range would be anything between £0 and £300 max

I was given the Atomic Floyd Min Darts as a present, and to be honest they are rubbish, the sound was flat, no detail, was not nice, I changed that for the Atomic Floyd HiDef Drum's as they would not give money back, these we a little better, low end was just ok and highs were so bright they were uncomfortable and no mid's what so ever... I think they are the most over prices earphones ever.

If anyone else listens to this type of music, what IEM's do you use ??

A few stand out, IE8's Westone 3's , Triple.fi, and plenty others, lots of reviews seem to say opposite things so never sure what to believe. So though it best to ask an expert group of people...

all the best, thanks for your time

Richard

I listen to a good amount of liquid drum and bass too, and I currently use the TF10. They're excellent for this type of music and any electronic music. If you're looking for more bass presence you might want to check out the IE8, but the TF10s have plenty if you're not a basshead. Just keep in mind that some head-fiers have reported the TF10s to have slightly recessed mids, but it's very minor in my opinion and I can barely notice it.

I've currently got a similar 'challenge'. I like the electronic genre that - for want of a better term - is often called nujazz or brokenbeat. The most renowned practitioners being Jazzanova from Germany. It's almost a prerequisite to have a bass-heavy phone to enjoy this kind of music, but at the same time it needs to handle live jazz instrumentation. In the uptempo songs you also need to handle the attack of fast and complex drum tracks.

I've decided to go down the on-ear route and I'm currently choosing between the ESW9 and Beyer DT1350. I think the ESW9 is the safer bet and I'm prepared to order it without an audition. Alternatively the Beyer could actually be the answer, but on the whole it sounds like a much riskier proposition from what I've read. I'm trying to find a place to demo it.

I've got 'Journey Inwards' and 'Producer 01' from LTJ Bukem and they're absolutely outstanding. Can you recommend similar albums in the genre I might enjoy on my new setup, should I ever make a decision? :)

Hi Thanks for the rely, love bass but defo not a bass head, i like the detail with the low end, takes some speakers to display very subtle changes with in the low end notes.

suppose i can always send them back if the shop supports that.

I am going towards the TF10's , i also like the idea of having three drivers , IE8's may be have to much bass maybe and i fear that will distract from the rest of the range. Spotted the W 3's again, to much bass may be, but then again I am not sure what to much bass is with these as have never listened to any of them...

I am guessing that any i get will be miles better than the ones I have now. MIght flip a coin :)

Any of Buckem's Earth Volume series or progression sessions (live is amazing)

From Earth Volume 2

Mind Games by DJ Crystl

Flashback by Intense

from logical progression level 3 album Intense track Afterlife (has some good detail in this track) lots going on in background, can only here this on my mission speakers, none existent on my current crappy headphones..

album Late Night Blues from Big Bud is also very good.

Hope they help you...

Wish i could try earphones before hitting the buy button

I'd say the TF10's would be a great choice also.  All I listen to is edm and they just really work well with that type of music.

If you want to hear a awesome D&B comp checkout Fabriclive 44 mixed Commix, its not atmospheric but its deep and smooth I'd call it minimal D&B.

I would recommend the W3. I wouldn't say it has too much bass when amped, just the right amount with nice punch. I've not heard the TF10 to compare it to the W3, but the ergonomics alone put me off. The W3 is super comfy and isolating.

Anything on Bukem's label Good Looking Records is worth a listen.

Not sure how the TFTA 2100 VB would hold up? I've not heard them personally but I've heard good things :)

Well it depends what you are after from the bass. I used to own both, but had to sell the W3 to make some money back. The IE8 has more bass quantity (especially if you crank the dial up) and the bass is slower which is usually the case with a dynamic driver. The W3 has less quantity but it is quicker and more punchy. I suppose you could look at it like a 12" subwoofer (IE8) versus a 10" sub (W3).

Also, if you like your treble bright the W3 would be the better choice.

most of the music i listen to seems to have a lot going on in the low end, and not so punchy... i am going for the IE8's... job done i think... they will be amazing compared to the Atomic Flyoid wanna be's I have now....

Thanks for every ones input on this...cheers
