How does the overall sound quality, bass and comfort compare to that of the ATH-M50?

Say what you want about Sony electronics (and for the record, I'm no longer a fan), but in their respective price brackets, Sony makes some damn nice headphones.  Seriously.

I really liked the XB500s back when I had them. They were super-bassy and pleasant to listen to, super comfortable and never harsh, and they got me into sound processing, which got me into basically being the town roadie for events that require speakers.

Not-so-long story shorter, they are great gateway headphones for bigger and better things.

I sold them to my DJ friend for $25. I sincerely hope he's not using them for production. XD

I read your other threads about the Sony XB series.  Eventually, I just want to get my hands on one selection from the series.  Is it safe to say that the biggest one is the best?

reviews have said that the xb 1000 has less bass than the others but is cleaner.

This is the one time I would say bigger is not better.  The XB1000 is fantastic, but at much higher price than the XB500.  For the money/performance, the XB500 is a better buy of the three.

My ATH-M50 is coming next week.  I'll let you know how it compares.

It's going to be a while before I make a decision.  First, I'm waiting for the 1000 to drop below $200, which I have a feeling will happen one day.

The 700 seems to be the best deal, since it's only a few 10s more than the 500.

The 500 gets a lot of recognition at this forum.
