125$ Budget

Hi all I'm new to this website and was hoping for some well informed advice.

I am looking to buy a nice pair of over-the ear headphones for around 75-125$

I discussed with my brother and he suggested the following;

Sennheiser HD-280-Pro

Audio Technica ATH-AD700

Akg K142HD

Sennheiser HD448

Grado SRi60

Koss Portapro

I looked into all of them and still can't decide. Although I have ruled out the Grado and Koss, I am not a fan

of the style in which they fit the ear. I would much rather they enclose my ear.

I'm not sure whether id prefer open or closed back.. However i do like the AKG because its sort of inbetween, i.e. partly open-back with

slits.

I'm open to most music genres but I am certain I have no desire for bass heavy cans.

Help would be greatly appreciated!

In your list you have all types of headphone for all genre of music, also open/closed, circum and supra aural...its hard to do a mix between them, lol.

If you can find a SRH840 for less 125$, buy it.

Sorry that nobody else has replied already =[

The company is on the list but not the exact model, Audio-Technica ATH M50.

100 Dollars, not bass heavy, but it is definitely there, it's smooth and tight but won't overpower anything whatsoever.

Mids are really friendly and warm for lack of better words, guitars and percussion sound so right, just right.

Highs are very clean and sharp, vocals lay over the instruments perfectly and don't do anything wrong.

Not a very good review, I never write the same words about them every time I suggest them, just kinda go with how I'm feeling that day, but for that price, you wont find a better headphone, really nice comfort and isolation, don't need an amp whatsoever.

I've had mine for a year and 3 months now and still love them like crazy.

^ I still want to see those ATH-M50's at $100 from a reputable store.  The lowest I can find at the moment is B&H at $135.

Two that are within your stated price range that should be considered are the KRK 8400 and the Sony MDR ZX700.  Both are closed back.  There are plenty of threads here at head-fi discussing them.

For semi-open, the AKG K240 Studio are also within your price range.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm quickly discovering that I know far too little about headphones.. haha

I've read a lot about these headphones but I feel like I can't decide until

ive actually tried them on.

Is there a specific place I could go to try a variety of headphones on? Is Best Buy a good location?

They are 100 on amazon probably during 3-4, 4 day segments per month.

I have seen them there for exactly 100 randomly when I am checking for people, right now they are at like 145, but trust me, they go down to 100 randomly.

The Sony MDR-V6 is worth a peek, too.
