Headphones Comparison

Thread Starter

Ive been looking for days for some new headphones to get. I have been using the standard Apple Ipod earbuds which suck.

So ive narrowed it down to the best headphones in my price range from the most popular brands.

Sennheiser HD 598

Ultrasone Hfi 2400

Denon AH-NC732(probably not these)

Sony MDR-V900HD

Audio Technica ATH-AD900

Somewhere around $200 is my price range and these all look pretty good. Keep in mind that I am listening with my Ipod Touch 4g, and I don't have an amp.

I listen to all types of music, from metallica to lil wayne to frank sinatra.

So, which of these would you consider the best? I dont care about weight, noise cancelling, etc. Just simply the sound quality.

Any other reccomendations for headphones would be great too

Thanks

The Sennheiser HD-598 is the best of the bunch you have listed.  It is an open can though and leaks a bit of sound if that is an issue.  I would highly recommend the V-Moda V80 or M80.  Both are built sonically the same, but the external flare is different.  The V80 is their TrueBlood promotional set whereas the M80 can be customized for $50 more with your own logo.

They are an upfront sounding headphone with deep bass, clear mids, with some slight roll off in the highs.  They are comfortable as well as built really well.  The Sennheiser headphones can be a tad weak and lend themselves to cracking over time.  The bass is a tad weak on the HD-598 as well, but they do sound nice.

The V80 / M80 come in at $200 and are my top pick for the $200 and under category.

To the OP: what is 'sound quality' to you? Tight bass? Lots of shiny treble? Lot's of detail and clarity?

Add the Fischer Audio FA-003 or Brainwavz HM5 (essentially the same can) to your list.

Really good allrounder that doesn't need amping and will cover most genres really well - very balanced can.

Shure SRH440/840, either model is fine. Probably the 840's needs a bit more power.

HFi2400 is very good too. More bright, much more bass impact, bigger soudstage, very detailled, but sometime too harsh, even warmer than HD598 and much more difficult to drive than the sennheiser.

With an ipod, forget them,lol.

AD900 and HD598 are probably the better all rounder headphone in your list.

SRH840 is effectively a very good choice too, but less efficient than HD598. Yes between the srh440 and the 840, the srh440 is more ipod friendly.

Look on Head-Fi for a used Audio Technica ATH-ESW9 - excellent closed portables!

You guys have been so helpful.

I think I am just going to get the Sennheiser 598s because they are more iPod friendly and i have gotten lots of recommendations for them.

And also I went over to Best Buy and they had the best sound quality there, and I just fell in love. *angels singing from above*

That's the best way to do it.  Audition them for yourself and buy them on the spot if you like them!  Enjoy!
