grade my setup?

Thread Starter

Hello everyone!

This is my first thread here. I was hoping to get a collective thumbs up or down on my setup. This is what I'm currently using:

27" iMac

Apogee Duet 2

KRK Rokit 5 2nd Gen

Shure SRH 440

Mogami Gold TRS Balanced Patch Cables

I'm on the fence whether to upgrade my speakers and / or my headphones. All comments & suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Carlo

Hmmm, grading... Assuming a summit-fi setup is in the A range, and a plain iPod with stock earbuds is in the E range, I give you a solid C+.

You've gone above and beyond the average with your entry-level dac and active monitors and headphones. Whether you upgrade the headphones or speakers, though, I think depends on which you enjoy using more right now. You can go a long way with a big headphone upgrade right now, even without getting any additional gear. With the KRKs you have now, you'll need to get something that takes way more space or get a whole new amp and passives to start upgrading that.

Thumbs to the side without knowing your power side of the equation. Power mods (e.g. dedicated lines, upgraded receptacles, power cords) made a huge difference in dropping the noise floor of my system, completely transformed the sound. And this is in a new home that I built and predominantly wired myself with three separate dedicated grounds. Though I would disagree with the notion that upgrading from the Rokit 5 to a model with noticeably superior build quality and sonics would necessitate a great increase in speaker footprint. Think Focal CMS 40, ADAM A5X, Dynaudio BM 5A. That said, C+ sounds about right for what you have listed...

I forgot to mention I'm using a Monster Power Station Pro 1000. I have a couple of Ebtech Hum Exterminators but are not being used. I'm on the fence on whether or not they're doing anything. Would using the power supply that came with the Duet 2 make a difference? It's currently being powered through the USB bus. I was thinking of upgrading the USB cable, maybe order a Kimber Kable or Wireworld Starlight USB?
