Well... he lost the auction... would have been funny if he won... funny in a sad kind of way though :[

I've seen this happen multiple times for this item. The $ amount is linear, showing bids in order, yet I don't understand why people would do that, except that there is something else going on. Granted the person doing that has zero feedback, so who knows what might be going on behind the scenes.

This is Ebay's automatic bidding system.  If the current bid for an item is at $20, and the next person bids $50, the price will increase to $21 instead of jumping to $50.  If a third person comes and bids $30, he will not be shown as the highest bidder.  The 2nd person will still be the highest bidder but the item price will be increased to $31,  until someone else bids higher than $50.

Thanks for the explanation.  I suspected it was automatic bidding but wasn't sure.  I've only bid on one thing in my entire ebay life and lost, and that was a textbook.

do lots of buying with no problems..tried selling  a few things and wonder how anyone is making money?? ebays fees are rediculous..charging 10% fees on shipping costs is just highway robbery!

Personally I like eBay and so far it has been good. I understand the fees can be annoying but over all, it's not too bad for me. The best part of eBay IMO is buying antiques and vintage stuff. Buying popular modern stuff on eBay is ok but nothing really too special.

An interesting (or unnerving, rather) story from a seller's perspective: http://codenerdz.com/blog/2012/12/03/think-of-selling-on-ebay-using-paypal-think-again/
