Sennheiser IE8i, Monster Gold Pro or what?

Hey guys,

I'm in a rather complicated situation so let me first explain:

I am a student, I consider myself a "budding audiophile" and I love audiobooks. When I commute I listen to audiobooks and when I study I listen to rather bassy music usually (trip hop, metal, rock, dnb). I often study in the university library which means isolation for my IEMs is important. A remote control is important for the audiobooks (quick pausing). My sources are an iPhone and a laptop with a Fiio E7. I listen to mostly lossless ALAC on the laptop and some 320kbps mp3s on the iPhone.

My last In-ears were a Klipsch X10i which had an OK sound, great ergonomics (very lightweight) and isolation. The remote was quite good, too. Unfortunately, they were very poorly built and broke down. The seller then sent me the regular Monster Turbines with a remote because supposedly the X10i were not produced anymore.

In any case, I read that the Turbines had an even worse build quality and life span so I don't want to unpack them. I'm selling them directly on eBay.

I did a bit of researching and it turned out that the Sennheiser IE8i with be a good match for me, except for the isolation point maybe. By the way, I live in Germany, so I can get the  IE8i for $320 with free shipping. As a comparison, the Monster Gold Pro (with remote) are over $380 here.

I checked out the big comparison thread but it only got me more lost then I was before!

As explained above, I'm looking for the following things:

  • build quality, long lifespan
  • isolation
  • good sound for bassy music (bear in mind that I liked the sound of the Klipsch X10i)
  • ergonomics for extended wear (3-4+ hrs)
  • remote

In the moment my choices are down to: IE8i for $320 or MGP for $385 both with remotes.

Can someone, please, help me find the right pair, as I have no experience in really expensive IEMs. The X10i were my most expensive pair so far. Thanks in advance!

Can't speak for the ie8's, but I didn't like the golds when I demo'd them. The bass was there, but there was not enough mids and treble to justify their price point. They do isolate very well with the super tips though. I think at that price you're better off with the IE8's (I couldn't even justify them for $150) but take my advice with a grain of salt

How about the Monster Miles Davis Tribute? I've read that they compensate for what the Golds lack in mids and treble. A concern I have for the Miles Davis pair is that some reviewers say the bass response is rather slow and I listen to quite a lot of fast music like rock/metal.

I'd get the IE8's right away if it wasn't for their supposedly bad isolation. I am listening to music quite often in a library setting where I can't have my music spilling everywhere, so to say. I also can't afford custom plugs right now.

Any other options beside the IE8's and the Miles Davis Tribute's?

EDIT: I ended up getting the Miles Davis Tribute's from ebay in "like new" condition (unwanted X-mas present) for roughly $195, which is actually half of their retail price in my country (Germany), so I figure it's a pretty good deal. I hope I get them on tomorrow or by Tuesday.
