Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

If the wires were detached, that implies that an amount of force was applied to them in order for that to happen. Are you sure that the cord itself is not broken somewhere?
It's possible that the cord itself can be broken, but I'm not sure how to test that. The right channel works just fine. It could be something at the jack connecting to the computer. Perhaps I should try just recabling the entire headphone?

Well you could always use a multimeter to test the voltage drop across the two wires while playing a tone or something. That would at least tell you whether it's making a full circuit.
Also the wires you soldered on didn't have any sort of sheathing or insulation that could be blocking it do they? I know it would most likely burn off on contact with the solder, but hey, can't hurt to ask...
EDIT: you could compare the voltage drop for the dead earphone against the working one (if there is a voltage drop) - that way you know if there's a break inside the earpiece or in the wire.
