BantamDAC's C11 and C13

Hi,

I've ordered a BantamDAC kit from Glassjaraudio and when i started to build BantamDAC I noticed that the kit did not include the caps for C11 and C13. Will this DAC work without them? I'm affraid to power it on since I don't want to damage anything.

Here are pics:

Thanks!

Are you sure that you don't have a couple of 1206-series SMD ceramic capacitors in Jeff's kit?  The Bantam BOM uses SMD caps at C11 and C13.  That's why the pads are both square and somewhat over-sized.  The silkscreen is there for a circular electrolytic at both positions, but that's not the default.  The reason being is that the TPS regulators need the ceramic SMD caps, not electrolytics.  In the layout image, you can see the rectangles drawn inside the circles, indicating a choice of which type of capacitor you can use. We kept the organic polymer at C12 because that's a critical low-ESR position in the circuit.  Here's the layout from the website:

All of the build instructions also show the SMD caps used at C11 and C13:

"Also, C11 and C13 have dual pads for electrolytic or SMD capacitors. The TPS regulators only use the SMD capacitors."

This is from Step 10 on this page:

Also, the video tutorials show the SMD caps installed here:

Yes, they are required and needed for the TPS regulators.  Contact Jeff at Glass Jar Audio if you do not have these caps.

Thanks for the reply tomb!

I followed those instructions when I started to build my BantamDAC and in step 10 I noticed that the caps were missing since all the parts were numbered. I don't have any capacitors left and C11/C13 are still unpopulated.

Anyway, I contacted Jeff via email.

OK.  Jeff's a good guy.  I'm sure he'll follow up with you quickly.  We all miss something every now and then.  It's hard to pack up all those itty-bitty parts. wink.gif
