Another need some opinions before purchase thread

Well as if there isn't enough of these threads here. Well, I think that its time that I just pony up for a good set of cans. For now they will be powered off of a Titanium HD. These are mostly going to be used for gaming and some occasional movies as well as music. I mostly listen to rock music so I don't need overly heavy bass but I do want bass unlike my AD-700. I do love my AD-700 but the lack of bass just kind of ruins the experience for me. I would prefer to stick with an open set of cans. I really like that airy spacious sound of the AD-700 but the lack of bass is just too much. I would also like something as comfortable.

I'm really about to pull the trigger on an HD598. From what I've read that sounds like the headphone for me. I've also been debating the DT990. I know that with my SR-850 which is also very bright and a bit fatiguing that they respond well to a bit of eq. I would really like to pick up a DT880 but they aren't cheap and I'm not sure that my titanium hd can push the 250ohm version. I'm not about to deal with gd-audiobase for an fa-011. Lastly should I consider an HD558 for $125? or should I just spend the extra $50 on the HD598? I'm leaning towards the 598 but any opinions would be appreciated.

HD558 is very close to the HD598, but HD598 is more refined and detailled when HD558 has slighlty more bass. Both are very good, but if you buy HD558 you ll regret to not know the HD598,lol.

Neither of those are considered bassy (with some saying they lack bass), but it's a step up from the AD700 in that aspect, at least.

Imo, the HD598 is much better in every way than the AD700. Maybe not the soundstage, but otherwise...

Thanks for the input. I ended up ordering an HD598. I'm not looking for a bassy headphone just a good all around open headphone. Is amplification a necessity for the HD598? If so what would be a good amp to pair with the HD598?

Its not an obligation but SQ is always improved with an amp.

Hey Bababooey remember me?  I would recommend skipping the 598 altogether and instead for for the HD-600; they are more neutral but should work out great for rock music and IMO significantly better in terms of quality overall.  Now if you want a more colored sound I'd recommend looking at Grado stuff depending on your budget; they are REALLY good for Rock stuff.

Thanks for the input. I might pick up an amp at some point down the road. Probably after I sell my AD-700, if I sell it.

How are you doing? I actually already bought an HD598. I've sort of wanted one for a while so hopefully this will scratch the itch. I may have to look into an HD-600 one of these days though. Sounds like it might be perfect for me. I do have to admit that I have been considering a Grado for music listening. Sounds like it could be a fun headphone.
