Need help with ASIO and Kernel Streaming

Thread Starter

Hello everybody.

I can't get Kernel Streaming and ASIO in foobar to work. I'm listening from Computer (Vista) through an USB DAC.

When trying to use Kernel Streaming (with correct Bit-rate selected) the music does not play and I get the following message:

Unrecoverable playback error: KS output error: error opening device.

When trying to start foobar (latest version) with the latest ASIO plugin I get the following message:

Internal error: one or more of the installed components have been damaged.

Does anyone have a solution?

Try WASAPI.

Are you picking the right device in Foobar and/or the ASIO settings?

I would really like to use WASAPI, though I can't use it cause I can't install Service Pack 1, which is required according to download-sites.

I'm picking the right device, yes (for kernel streaming) but there's no settings for ASIO, cause I can't start foobar with the ASIO plug-in in the components folder.

Hmm, I just rechecked a download-site. Service Pack 1 is not required in all cases. I tried WASAPI and it works.

Edit: I'm still interested in solutions for ASIO or Kernel Streaming, cause I don't like WASAPI muting other applications.

As far as I know, plugins need to use exclusive mode (i.e., no other sounds playing) in order to ensure bit-perfect playback. That's the advantage of these plugins; they bypass the Mixer and go directly to the hardware. I know kernel streaming will mute applications, and I imagine ASIO has some setting to disable that but it may prevent bit-perfect playback (which is what you want).

You could just use DirectSound. Vista's mixer works differently than Windows XP, I don't think there are as many benefits to bit-perfect playback anymore.

Both ASIO and kernel streaming will do the same so I'm afraid that's something you're going to have to deal with if you want to use any of them.

Edit: Not quick enough. frown.gif

Edit II: I made a thread about ASIO and such a while ago. It might be a little outdated, but there might still be something relevant in there. Link.
