Volume control on the hd598???

Just got delivery of the Hd598...

I'm connected to my computer with these, and on some music ,I need to crank up the volume to 80-90%

Is this volume level normal for a new set of mid-range quality headphones?

Just wondering ,if I need to break these in for a week or so?,or,get a  amp/new/ sound card,or,both?

Any suggestions wold be appreciated,

Thanks,

Mike

All depends on your computer audio amp. HD598 is an efficient headphone but a small amp is required for the best results. To answer you, its normal and some music are recorded at very low volume.

I just got a pair of the hd598's and i have them just plug ed into the front audio port of my computer. Idk if the on board creativity x-fi chip that i have makes any diff but i can listen to these at really any level, but i am looking for a dac and amp just to bring out more in the music.

Mine are connected to the top audio port too.

trothad...what is" Idk"???

I believe that DVDRey,has nailed the problem..when I listen to some older recording in my itunes library,I crank up volume to 80-90%,however,when I'm just listening to internet radio {iheart radio} a level of 40-50% is fine.

I have a Fiio e10 amp, being delivered today,so,I'll post back,to let you know how it works out.

One thing,or,maybe its just me,but I've been using these headphones on & off,for the last 8 hours, and the sound quality seems to be improving, especially in some of my jazz selections, the detail & separation of these speakers is amazing.

Another thing, they are extremely comfortable....they feel extremely lite.

One peeve though ..Sennheiser could have at least supplied a casing,or at minumum,a felt bag to keep dust out, when not in use.

At $250.00 ,this is not asking too much.

Thanks to all you guys who posted back on all my questions,I'm new to Head-Fi....this is a great forum.

Idk = I dont know. :D  but ya they do get better the longer you use them.  BUT! fair warning they will get to a point where they are going to sound just bleh why did i spend 250 on these.  Dont worry about it your in the middle of the break in.  i went through the same thing and at the end they come out sounding like heaven on your ears. :D mine took about a good 72 to 120 hours of actually play time to break in.

OK...Thanks for the additional info

So,did you decide what amp/dac to get??

I have the HD 598s paired with the Fiio E10.  It works great compared to my on-board realtek audio.  No static and great clarity.  When i want to listen to some trance with a bit more bass, i turn on bass boost.  When i listen to some instrumentals/classical, i keep bass boost off.  Haven't regretted my purchases one bit.

p.s. the computer audio should be maxed out at 100% for the usb E10 device while using the volume knob on the E10 itself.  Knob never goes past level 3 which is pretty darn loud.

Ztreb,

Your timing is perfect...I got delivery of the E10 about an hour ago.

Thanks for clarifying the computer volume level,I wasn't sure??..I'll reset it to 100%

Question:

What is the "gain" button on the back of the E-10??

Is that for any hissing noise, and should it be high or low??

Not sure if my hd598 are beginning to break in...or...my ears are breaking in??

This thing sounds,unbelievable.....

PS-Hey Sennheiser,can you mail me a bag/case to put these things in...Please?

Yea 100% for computer audio so you ensure you get a strong and clear signal from the pc to the E10.

The gain switch is if you need more power or juice for harder to drive headphones.  The E10 high gain would be used for headphones with high impedance around 250 or 300 ohms, maybe even higher.  Low gain is plenty for the hd 598s.  It usually would just make the volulme louder if you find it too quiet.
