Newbie looking for headphones

Posted this here, but it was kinda ignored.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums, so don't kill me if I write something stupid. =)

I'm no audiophile (I don't think I even have the ear for it), but I do enjoy music a lot and am thinking of buying something a bit better than the 10$ stuff, the thing is, my budget is on the low side.

I was thinking about the Shure SRH440, but I'd like to find out a bit more before hand. Thing is, I currently own an In-Ear set of AKGs who's model I never bothered to find out (I believe after two years they're on the verge of falling apart), I also own a Skullcandy GI something or other, which cracked about a month after I bought them (it?), don't know if it's my fault, or just crappy build quality, although the sound quality seems decent to me (Like I said, not an audiophile).

My question is, will the Shure be better? Considering the dislike of Skullcandy I've noticed while lurking and doing my research (not very successful, in all honesty), I'd expect them to have a big WOW factor compared to the Candy's.

I listen to a pretty large selection of genres but the main ones are Rock, Metal, DnB.

On an unrelated note, is there any sort of FAQ or Wiki that would explain the basics of what's what in the Audiophile world?

The 440s are pretty uncomfortable from what I remember of them. Good SQ though.

Also, stay away from Skullcandy. Waaaay way away.

Yea, I've realized that Skullcandy are a no no.

What would you recommend recommend comfort wise?

SRH440 is a very good headphone for the price, i don't think there is better for 70-80$.

Comfortable? well, like all headphones, all depends of your head morphology. I have no problems with shure headphones, but some peoples have problem with shure headband.

From your experience for about how long is it possible to wear them in a sitting?E

By the way, is there a point in buying any sort of external sound card if I'm using a laptop (Asus U30S), and if so, what's recommended for a low price?

Other alternatives in that price range are the Koss Pro DJ100 or the Sony V6. The Sony V6 might be a bit more now, as its price has risen recently.

Amazon is having a sale on the Creative Aurvana Live! headphones right now for $55 shipped.  They won't be in stock till the 15th, but this is a great price for a very good set of headphones.  Comfortable, with warm, slightly bass emphasized sound.
