Basshead looking for first set of headphones

I am looking to buy my first ever set of headphones. I listen to mostly rap and hip hop, including some rock. After a lot of research i have narrowed down my choice to the following set of headphones - Denon D1100, DT770s, ATH Pro700 MK2s and HFi 580s. I tried out the XB500s but i did not like the muddy highs and mids. I wouldn't mind sacrificing bass for better quality. I currently own the Klipsch Image S4 IEMs and i like them but i have to turn the volume up for the bass i want and at that volume the highs are too sharp and annoying. So I am looking to improve from that. I won't be using an amp and will mostly use them with my Mac and iPhone.
Also what online retailer do you suggest i buy them from, i want a retailer with a good return policy so i can return the HPs if they don't meet my expectations. I know about Headroom but they don't carry what are currently my top 2 choices - the Pro700MK2s or the HFi 580s.

Amazon is usually pretty good to me. Re: Pro700mk2 v. 580's, I felt the 700's had a better bass overall but in the mids and treble, the 580s had them beat.

I did a review on both of them, in my sig :)

Thanks for the quick reply, how bad are the treble and mids on the 700s? Is it as bad as the XB 500, or is it better. I hear the treble on the 580s can be overpowering which is what makes me unsure about them, as i said the biggest problem i have with my klipsch IEMs is that the treble can be way too much for me at higher volumes but at lower volumes the bass is not good enough.

Try the HTF600. Imo, its awesome bass doesn't bleed into the mids and highs.

Hats off to Panasonic - a decent headphone created by a non audio specialist company is the last thing I expect.

I did go through you review and i must say it was really comprehensive. What would you say about my concern about the treble of the 580s. I can't stand too much treble for more than one song. I was set on getting the 580s but then i read your thread and Generals karls review of the 700s and got confused. From your threads what i got was that the 700s have more bass but they sound somewhat warm and are not that good at instrument separation. The 580s seem great but I am afraid the bass is a bit too audiophile esque and i may not be able to appreciate it as much, also there is the whole treble thing which is what initially scared me away from them.

I've heard worse. The treble is surprisingly tame, albeit bright. Out of the box, it does get pretty uncontrolled and screechy, but as you allow the drivers to loosen up and break in, the treble is the first thing to improve.

X2 I just got my DJ1 and out of the box the treble was pretty extreme and overwhelming, but even 12 hours in the treble had mellowed and now 24 hours in it's even better.
