No idea where to start?!?!

Like the title says, I am completely new to higher end audio, and I have no idea where to start.  I was hoping that some of you might kindly offer your advice and knowledge.

 

Backstory- I am in my second year of medical school right now.  I love it, but at times it completely drains me.  I have found that listening to music is one of only a few things that really soothes my soul.

 

Here is what I have:  Grado SR80 headphones and a 13" 2011 MacBook Pro Computer (8 gb RAM if that makes any difference)

 

The headphones were an investment I made several years ago and they rock my world.  They are probably nothing special in the audiophile scene but they have served me well.

 

So the question.....Where do I go from here???????

 

(Possibly relevant info....I mostly listen to Blues, Folk and an occasional smithering of Rap.  Tube amps appeal to me, but that is from a purely aesthetic perspective.  I prefer something that would last for years if that is possible)

Possibilities are endless.

 

You can get another pair of headphones to try out another sound signature. Dependent on which headphones you're interested in an amp might help improve the sound even further. Adding in a DAC might take that sound even higher up.

 

If you like the headphones you have now then you can look into a speaker setup. Active/passive, DAC, amp come into play here as well.

 

One option is trying out a closed headphone so you can hear the differences between your open Grados and a closed pair. If you listen to blues/rap then a suggestion is the Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones. Closed headphones that have really impressive bass and a pleasant overall sound.

 

Browse the forums and start checking out all the threads that interest you, you'll get ideas in no time.

Not sure u looking for higher end cans only or with speaker set up as well but for the latter : stay far far away from "multimedia" speakers! For excellent SQ *and* built to last go hifi/amps + proper speakers and audition before forking out the green L3000.gif
