Bcg27 is correct. A pot works as a voltage divider. A 20K pot is just as loud or soft as a 100K pot. The only difference is the load seen by the equipment driving the amp (and pot).

I will now chime in with a recommendation to try a "shunted" audio-taper pot. Careful selection of the shunt resistor allows you to use the pot in the middle or top third of its operation, where even small form-factor pots are generally well matched.
