Question for Cowon owners - x7 in particular

Just got an x7 a few days ago, and am liking it so far.  i have not removed the screen protector that it shipped with- - in case i do decide to return it-- but it does seem to impair the touch capability.  I am curious to see what you folks do with yours.

Do you go without any screen protector?  use the stock one?  or is there an aftermarket protector that works better - especially for scrolling.

So far, i think the ui is ok, the capacity and battery life are wonderful, and the sound is pretty good.  I am pretty sure i am going to keep it, but would certainly appreciate any advice as to how to get the most out of it.

The original screen protector is a bit too soft to last long, not made for everyday use.

I bought a Folix FX-Clear Screen Protector, cheap with great transparency and a hardcoat to resist abuse. Folix is a german brand which offer custom-cut films for almost any player. They also provide other model with different finish: mat finish, glossy with anti-reflective coating, mirror finish...

Next thing: if you wanna buy a case for your X7, please do yourself a favor: DO NOT buy the official Cowon leather case!!! I bought it because the official leather case for my Cowon D2 was really topnotch, but for the X7, it really sucks because it does not protect the sides of the player, which is precisely what should be protected in priority during a fall...

Next advice: custom UIs!  Unless you have small fingers and like the base UI, install alternative UIs like Leaf, Sense, Lynx. They will make your X7 way more intuitive and practical to use (larger buttons, easy search, nice covers).

For sound effects, leave everything flat and start playing with the BBE effect first, it should "open" the sound on most IEMs, unless your headphones/IEMs already have a very large soundstage from the start.

Once you're satisfied with the BBE setting, start playing the 5-band equalizer with finesse to fit your taste.

You could also try the presets, but I find them too colored.

That should be it for the main perks.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I just ordered one of those protectors from Amazon, along with a spare USB cable.

I am using the player with the settings at normal, (flat, i am assuming).  I am not one to use tone controls or EQ, but it's certainly easy enough to switch settings quickly to see what's what sonically.  Flat, it sounds pretty good- i even tried it with LCD-2s just for laughs.  it drove them, but was a bit anemic.  My go-to iems are Grado GR-8s, but have also played with ie-8 Senns. RE-0, and an older set of denon c-700 (iirc).

I am waiting for the Cardas in ears to come out, and will try them as well.

any other thoughts from other x7 users are always appreciated.

Pretty much what tienbasse said.

I tried the other hard drive based DAPs (i.e. iPod, Zune) and the Cowon is the best of them all IMO. The battery life is fantastic, build quality is top notch, and of course the quality and tweakability of the sound blows the competition out of the water. Yeah, the UI isn't amazing, but there's nothing particularly wrong with it either. I do use a custom music UI though. I've had no usability issues with the touch screen. A few hiccups here and there, but nothing even worth mentioning. The click wheel on the iPod could be much more annoying at times. Don't have a screen protector at the moment, but those Folix ones look awesome. I think I'll pick up an anti-glare one.
