Aurisonics Impressions and Reviews - Page 127

I honestly don't know how to even go about figuring that type of thing out, so I don't know if i will be of much help, though I do plan on starting a review thread specifically for the AS-1's when I get them. I am thinking about starting it soon so i can ask about what suggestions people have for songs to listen to before/during and after burn in to really get a good idea of how the CIEM's perform and have changed over time.

EDIT: just checked my tracking number, my impressions arrived at Aurisonics just minutes ago.

Thread Starter

I'm hoping to receive my set of filtered ASG-1s sometime Monday, they are now removable (not permanent) and will eventually be a self-install add-on ( I think ). I'll give them a test spin to see how they compare to the non-filtered version. These maybe a new set altogether though so I might need to redo the burn-in process before I start.

Also, waiting on the shipment of the AS-1b's. Dale also mentioned that because of the tuning ports, they are "a different beast altogether." I'm not sure exactly what to expect since I haven't seen too many AS-1b reviews out there and it is very possible like Kenman mentioned that they have been re-tuned. Though I think the AS-1b's may also include the filters which would add even more diversity to the ability to change their sound :)

Excited to see what the results!

I actually don't hear a dip, I do hear a peak, just not as large as everyone else says it is...  2-2.5 dB peak.  I can't tell if it's a spike or plateaue though.  But the peak isn't the entire midrange, it's just the 1k to 1.5k area.

I think I know what he meant by this now.  Tuning ports are most likely a port for the driver.  This leads to improved bass response.  This can make the IEM sound completely different than if it wasn't ported. Also remember, the AS-1bs have adjustable bass (you turn a screw; similar to Senns), which can also alter the entire signature as well.

My fault, I read it wrong, I thought you said you heard a dip at 1.4kHz, not 14kHz.  I hear a dip at 14kHz, as does everyone else.  The only thing I hear forward is the 1k to 1.5 k region, everything else is balanced (instrumentals don't hold the energy the vocals do).

My reference headphone is, without a doubt, Hifiman HE-500. It's easily the best headphone I ever heard and is generally very neutral with a slight peak in the lower treble, extremely natural in tone and with a sublime liquidity than nothing else I tried can match. Compared to HE-500, RE-262 is certainly warmer, but not by a lot. Sound quality wise, HE-500 sounds quite a bit better which is to be expected given the price difference, but then HE-500 also sounds significantly better than any other headphone I owned as well in most cases.

My other reference right now is Ultimate Ears 600 IEMs when driven by my HM-601. It's jaw dropping what this combo can do for the price. I am not sure why, but UE600s transform with the HM-601, compared to your average portable like say Sansa Clip, despite its high sensitivity and low impedance. I suppose it's the extremely low 13 Ohm impedance that makes UE600 really demanding of source quality. The sound of the HM-601 + UE600 combo is on the warm side with an extremely natural tone in the mids. Honestly, I think this can take on HE-500 out of the same HM-601, although UE600 is not as smooth sounding as HE-500 ( but then which BAs or dynamics can match the Orthos in smoothness? Very few, if any). HE-500 + HM-601 combo is pure eargasmatron. UE600 + HM-601 is still impressively realistic sounding, but because it is less smooth than HE-500 the sound is somewhat boring compared to HE-500 + HM-601.

RE262 + HM-601 also sounds very good, but looses out to UE600 in the mids which are not quite as articulate and tonally accurate as with the latter.

Fair enough. I haven't listened to any of Hifiman's products but the UE600 to me isn't close to being a neutral and natural monitor.  Thanks for clarifying! smily_headphones1.gif

Just an observation, but I've never seen a thread that discussed Eq as much as this one.  At least not one that wasn't about Eq.

True

I think EQ for the time being is essential for personal listening on the ASG-1's - from what I understand.

Missed the postfrown.gif. Will have to wait til Monday.......Having read through most of this thread, I am still undecided as to using what cable first?

I would like to thank ericp10 for his invaluable advice regarding tips. I will follow it to the Tbeerchug.gif

I just switched from Comply Ts-500 to large MEELec M11 large "mushroom" tips.

Find it better already: moooaaaaaaaaaaar bass, better clarity in the mids/treble, and comfort is still excellent.

The hump in the higher-mids is still there after 50 hours of burn-in, but I guess my brain starts to adapt. But I still want to get the filters as soon as they're available, to at least put female voices at a more reasonable level (no issue with male voices).

You can appreciate the jumbo size of my ear canals with the picture of these mushroom tips.biggrin.gif

Spkrs01: why not starting with the stock cable, as a reference? It's always a good thing to do, before fiddling with other cables.

While I think I agree with your observation on this thread, and I hate to be this guy, but your grammar is incredibly bad. Sentences and spell check are your friend.
