Mr. Cat Man, you can see initial impressions of XBA-4 here>> http://www.head-fi.org/t/582036/its-like-universal-iem-deja-vu-journey-into-universal-iems-when-i-thought-i-was-done/150#post_8133005

Can't wait to get the universal so that I can compare both on this thread.

I'm jealous, I have a tracking # but USPS has not received them yet.  (Might be better that way, my wife won't see them and ask about them) very_evil_smiley.gif

I find that shiping to my work address reduces the risk of this... very_evil_smiley.gif

Does any one here know or heard if and when the metal plates will be available?  I'm betting it will be a $30-50 option like most other CIEM manufacturers.  I have a feeling I'll be going up to the customs after the universal arrives early next week.

So a package came today for me.... containing both my AS-1b and the ASG-1 from Aurisonics. I had time to photograph them, try each for fit, and listen very briefly before I had to go do some family stuff. So unfortunately I can't offer much in the way of impressions about the sound. What I can offer is lots of pictures to make up for it!

The ASG-1 comes in a smaller case like this.

Inside is just the IEMs and a bag with a few tips (3 sizes total including the ones already attached).

Hard to see the textured shell and faceplate in a picture.

Here's the stem, as you can see it should accept lots of tip styles.

Now for the custom molded AS-1b. It comes in a larger Oterbox and includes some instructions, a soft pouch, and the adjustment tool to open the ambient vent and bass port.

If you click this to enlarge you may be able to see the "AS" logo on the faceplate. The two things

on the left and right side of my initials are for adjusting the ports.

Recessed socket fits really deep - it was actually very hard to remove the cable for the first time. Also notice

the black "comfort ring" around the tip - supposed to help achieve a tight seal even when your jaw moves.

So, time for extremely tentative initial impressions:

  • The build is nice, very unique with the huge tip opening and textured finish.
  • The cables are standard Westone style, look great but will soon turn green like always.
  • The ASG-1 fits pretty well - I have larger ears and there is lots of room, so I suspect even those with small ears will be able to fit these pretty well.
  • My AS-1b fits well but a little less snugly than my other customs. The comfort ring seems to do a good job because I have a hard time breaking the seal. Interestingly, I'm getting a slight "driver flex" sound when inserting them. I guess that's to be expected with a huge dynamic driver.... it isn't bothersome at all, just different.
  • The sound is interesting - bass is very deep and effortless, but not as pronounced as I thought it might be (a good thing.... I didn't want it crazy large). This is with pretty much zero time on them, and all ports closed, so things could readily change.
  • My very first impression is that they remind me a bit of my old Audio Technica W1000 (as powered by high end tube amplification), with a sort of unique, almost dry sound to vocals that isn't exactly textbook perfect, but I quickly start to enjoy.
  • These are going to take some time to wrap my head around. They extend well in the highs, have some great snap without being too aggressive, full bodied lows again without overdoing it, and those interesting mids. I have about 30 seconds on the ASG-1 and it seems very similar at this early stage.

I apologize for the lack of details but I'm exhausted and ran out of time today. More to come over the next few days though, as soon as I have something worthwhile to add. I hope more people have theirs arrive soon so I can hear their thoughts!
