I usually use my Hifiman 601 with the FX700s and find them to pair very nicely together. I hear the 602 pairs even better with the FX700s, but at $400.00 it's an exorbitant price IMO. You may have sweeter mids on the 602 but at the expense of treble extension and bass texture/extension. Pairing my UHA4 though through the line out of the 601 I'm positive it surpasses the 602 even in the mid range. For home use I'll use my DACport LX paired with my UHA amp. What you get with this combo is a very transparent  and quite neutral sound with a very beautiful mid range. I must say there is emphasis on the mid range with these 2 paired together but it just works very well. The UHA 4 had extra clarity added to its mid range while the LX brings a more forward and detailed mid range. Both combined and it makes for an intriguing musical experience.

Well I got my Atrio M5 today, so I thought I'd add some quick thoughts after an hour of listening. Apparently I really am a basshead, because these are pretty much perfect for me. The shape of the earphones fits very well with my ears and they provide better isolation than my FXT90. I can chew and talk without losing the seal, the cable is excellent and similar to the cable on my Shures, almost completely non-microphonic. The non-EQed bass in these is comparable to the FXT90 with a +5 db bass boost applied through my soundcard. Mid are a bit more recessed in the atrios, and bass would definitely be too much for some people. The FXT90 does have slightly better clarity in the mids and highs as well. I guess I would describe the atrios as smoother, while the FXT90 has better separation.

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd post an update as I've now got both the FXT90's and the MG7's. As an upgrade from the S4's the MG7's are a major step up in the low-end response but quite similar, maybe even slight recessed, in the mids and treble although I feel that after some burn-in this will allow the MG7's to open up. The separation and soundstage is about the same. The FXT90's are clearly inferior in the bass department but mids, treble and soundstage is slightly better, although the treble can be harsh at times, again with burn-in I'm guessing this will be tamed. Separation is again similar maybe even better on the S4's.

Now as an alternative to the TF10's the FXT90's are inferior in every aspect, whereas the MG7's are better with bass, in fact the best I've ever heard, but lose out on just by a bit on everything else. The mids and treble are just crystal clear with the TF10, the FXT90's are good with these as well but can get harsh at times. The soundstage and separation is the best I've ever heard on the TF10's and I guess that's expected with a triple driver earphone. Yet as noted before the fit of the TF10's make them lose out in my opinion.

So after months of searching I've decided to keep both the Atrio's and JVC's, the Atrio's being my primary pair and occasionally using my FXT90's when I require more treble. Certainly as an upgrade from the S4's the Atrio's are a better choice. To be honest I think I expected more from the FXT90's, especially after reading about them on the appeciation thread, having said that they are great earphones and I highly recommend them to everyone. In a perfect world I would take the fit of the Atrio's or JVC (as they are both pretty comfortable), the bass of the Atrio's and pretty much everything else of the TF10's!. The TF10's sound will certainly be missed but I know the Atrio's are not too much of a compromise, I will be happy with them for years to come.

Thanks again everyone for your help/advice.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your purchase. I'm surprised you find the TF10s to have better separation though than the FXT90. I kinda figured they would have better separation. Then again I don't own them and just went off from impressions. I find my FX700 to have clearly better separation though than the TF10s. When comparing them it makes the TF10 sound like the whole sound is mushed together and barely any separation while the FX700 just force the detail and naturalness on you effortlessly.

I'm not sure where you got the "too much" bit from... I've never heard the Atrios, so cannot comment on personal preference. See also the "I have read" bit. Apologies if I was unclear, I used the term "bass monsters" to describe a group of earphones which are known primarily for the strength of their bottom end. The Atrios belong in this group, and are well known for being amongst the best basshead earphones around. In that light, I'm not surprised you find their bass perfect. Perhaps the OP would too.

However, the OP did state that he wanted something more than just bass, with great mids and sparkling highs. From what I've read, the Atrios have slightly recessed mids, moderate highs and a comparatively darker sound signature than the Sony's or JVCs. Furthermore, he wants something which sounds like the TF10 (which has a very wide soundstage), so he may find the Atrios soundstage unimpressive.

"bass monster" implies too much bass for non-monsters. The atrios have great bass capability, but also control, so no, they are not just for bassheads. In fact, they sound great with classical music as their superior timbre in the mids gives them an edge even over much more expensive iems, such as the Sony EX1000, at least to my and others' ears.
