Help me out guys

Hey there, im pretty new to the site, and i want to get into headphones, but dont know where to start. i almost bought beats.... glad i didnt. i started looking into some skullcandy g.i.'s  but i didnt do that either. i dont really want to spend more than $100 on good quality starting headphones, but i dont know where too look. i want good sound quality, but everyone knows that a sleek design to go with it would be best. i love the V-MODA Crossfade LPs, but they are a bit pricey.

could anyobody lend me a hand? thatd be great :)

Are you looking to commute with them? What kind of music are you into? If rock and metal go with the Grado SR60 or SR80.

Easy, spend 100 dollars on Audio-Technica ATH-M50.

I promise you the best buy for that price range, sleek looking, super durable, super comfortable, fantastic sound for portable listening.

Such a balanced set of cans, excels in any genre of music, bass is nice and deep and tight and doesn't mud up any of the exceptionally smooth mids and crisp highs.

The vocals are so precise and everything seems almost in nirvana. You can't find this sound from any other headphone in this price range at least that I've experience so far, I have had them for a 1 year and 3 months now and I love them to death.

Recently I have got a new sound card for my computer with nice built in EQ options and if you have that handy it makes them even more fantastic like 100x!

Take my word for it and other people will back me up for sure, get the M50s. You won't regret it.

Also, do you need closed or open?

Closed: Usually around the ear, improves isolation, improves the ability to block out noise outside of your music.

Open: Usually on ear (but there are both on and over of open AND closed), lessens isolation, lets outside noise get in.

Also, will you be willing to use an amp with these headphones?

Edit: Dont jump on those ATH-M50s mentioned above JUST YET. Yes, they could be great for you, but if you're in Canada. You wont get em for under 100$. Period. Also, they may not suit your needs, give us some more info first :)

well, i listen to rap, techno, rock, hip hop, and alternative. pretty much well rounded with all kinds of music except for the concert type stuff and country. noice isolation would be nice, but not completely needed. i had skullcandy lowriders, and i enjoyed them, but im looking for something thats more..... well more than skullcandy can give.

also, im in alaska, so its still u.s. haha

and closed or open doesnt matter too much as long as my budget fits, and they are potable enough for everyday use outside the home

Okay okay thats pretty good. Just one more question that'd really help us out (headphones are a really subjective and personal experience xD But trust us, the more info you give us, the more we'll be able to pick a headphone that is right for you).

What kind of sound signature do you like?

Do you like gobs and gobs of bass invading your face and causing a gene mutation?

Do you like the high's to sparkle and be detailed and exagerated?

Do you want to hear the mids perfectly, or exxagerated? or do you find them boring?

Do you want flat-respone headphones like my V6s that are primarily used in studio monitoring, or do you want a coloured and stylized response with some frequencies accentuated and some dropped down?

What do you value most? Bass? highs? mids? Sub-bass? etc, etc.

If you pick up a Grado off amazon and expect it to have gobs of bass, you're going to be sorely dissapointed in them ;) So help us out, what do you like hearing?

like i said, i guess you could say that im kind of a noob when it comes to knowing a lot about sound qualities, but i want to know, and experience more. i like big bass, but not so massive that its hard to understand. i listen to music kinda loud, so i want something that doesnt get really muffled at higher volumes. i havent listened to very many kinds of headphones, so i dont really know the major differences are.

sorry i cant be more help :/

No problemo.

You like bass? I dont think Grados are for you then. Maybe some Shure's, Sony's or Audio Technicas... or Creative Aurvana Live!'s... Hrmmm =-= Say, do you mind a long chord? A coiled chord? Etc.  I got the MDR-V6, 750DJ, 440, M35s, or Creative Aurvana Live!'s floatin around in my head for ya.

Say, are you rough with your phones? Use em for gaming? movies? Music making?

well i am kinda rough with them if i can. if they are needing to be protected then i would take precautions. i want something i could toss into my bag and go to my classes with. im a senior in high school, so durability is something that i would be looking for. like i said, stylish is good too. i want to kinda show em off to people who dont know what the hell is so great about them, but they look good haha. and the cord can be coiled, but id prefer it not to be. for the most part they will be for recreational use.

thats why i started to look at the skullcandy g.i. gold, because they look outstanding

Shure SRH840, it really defines what a headphone should be especially in it's price range, I saw them go on sale at least 3 times for $99, and that was in Canada, so I'm sure you can find some for a good price. I personally did not like the M50's I found the detail, and neutrality, i.e. no to much exaggeration in highs, or lows(bass) of the SRH840's to be amazing. They don't look to good, I have to say but boy do they sound awesome!

Oh I see then that crosses out the M35 as those things have a VERY long UNCOILED chord which sucks for portable use.

If flashiness is really up on your list, then the Creative Aurvana Live!'s have a simplistic glossy look about them that just look plain neat. The Shure 750DJs have some really nice-looking points to em. The MDR-V6s have a really rugged minimalistic look that just screams "proffesional, clean, heavy-duty", atleast thats what my friends tell me wink.gif

The 440s dont really look amazing.

In termsof durability of those phones, the V6 are LEGEND for their durability, stories of then lasting 20 years of abuse are abundant. Then comes the Shures 750DJ which just are a nice solid pair of phones, then the CAL!s which are ALSO quite solid.

If you got a bigger head, the 750DJs are NOT for you. So what would you say your head size is?

Btw, where are the Senn/Denon/AKG/etc crowd?! I cant chime in on those headphknes and might be missing suggestions frown.gif Head-fiers unite! XD

I've been browsing these forums for awhile and I think most people would tell you that they just aren't worth what you'd be paying for. If it needs a celebrity's name on it to sell, it most likely is not worth the money you'll be spending on it.

i know what you mean, but i havent seen any talk so far thats against the souls. im wondering if they would be worth it. are they a better price for their quality that beats by dre (not setting a high bar, but still)

To be honest, I wouldnt pull the trigger on those just yet.

A: The sub-100$ souls do not look at good as the CAL!s or 750DJs or as bossly as the V6s, so why bother getting them?

B: The reason you dont hear a lot of bashing to them around here is because they arent so popular, are newer, havent had time to hit some offshore markets, etc.

C: Not a whole lotta good sources have reviewed them, but those who have just say they're rebadged Beats. While I wouldnt say they're the same, I would say their signature is decidedly mainstream (similar to beats), and if they arent, I'll allow you to shoot me in the foot with a .40 S&W

D: For durability... Really? No one has ever said they're durable...
