Millett Max -> Millett Mosfet Max?

Thread Starter

Hi guys.

I've been out of the scene for a couple of years. Last time I was really into it I bought a glassjar Millett Max kit and I have been using it ever since.

I have recently become interested again and I've seen that there is a Millett Mosfet Max.

I've done a search, so apologies if this has been covered - is it possible for me to upgrade my green-PCB Millett Max into a Mosfet Max, or do I need to start again with the red-PCB "real" Mosfet Max?

Many thanks :)

We revised the PCB with the power supply improvements that we refined on the MiniMAX.  The MAX V1.2 PCB has a power supply that registers about 45uV under a 350ma load.  There's no way the earlier MAX PCB achieved that kind of performance and it makes a noticeable difference in sound.

Also, the MAX V1.2 PCB has provision for an onboard DAC.  It was originally designed to use the BantamDAC, but the new SkeletonDAC or GrubDAC will both work.

The MOSFET MAX utilizes the only MOSFET diamond buffer that I'm aware of in an available DIY design.  Bias is recommended at 125ma, but more is possible.

If you're wanting to update your MAX as it is, then refer to this thread where I just posted the possibilities yesterday:

Sorry to hijack slightly.

Tomb I have some of the original boards from the group buy as of yet unbuilt, do you think it would be worthwhile to just build one of the improved designs instead ?

Only have tubes at this stage, haven't got around to ordering the rest of the parts yet.

Seems worthwile for the small cost of a PCB, considering how much people spend on tweaks with slim improvements if any, seems like an easy way to get a significant and measurable improvement, before I've even fired up the soldering iron.

Maybe I can gift the PCBs to someone.

The power supply changes between the original boards and the current ones cut the noise by 2 to 3 times.  The changes were not something that were backward-compatible with the old board.  Much of it had to do with tweaks in the ground plane.

Yeah, I read through that on the diyforums site and saw the literal 'hacking' on the original boards groundplane to try and improve it.

Perhaps I should re-word what I was asking.

If you had the orginal PCB would you build that or just buy the newer PCB ?

As the cost of a PCB seems small compared to the gains.

You've been answering your own question. wink.gif
