5.1 speakers don't work other speakers do, whats the deal?

I don't know much about audio stuff so bare with me.  I have a soundblaster x-fi fatality sound card and a 5.1 creative speaker system.  I've never had any problems with them before but today I was playing a game and the sound just stopped.  There was no static, or other noises, it was working and suddenly not working, dead silence.  The system I have has a sub as, I guess you would call it a hub.  All five speakers plug into the sub, the power comes from the sub, and the connection from the soundcard hooks into the sub.  The sub also has it's own external volume control as well.

I had an old set of computer speakers, just two crappy speakers from an old computer, I plugged them into the soundcard and the sound worked fine.  So I don't think it's the soundcard or computer that is causing the problem.  I'm pretty sure the speakers are getting power, the volume control has a power indicator light and it's on, when I turn them on I can hear the little thump sound that you here when you power on speakers, I can't think of how else to explain the sound but every speaker I've ever had makes the same sound when you turn the power on.  I've checked all the connections multiple times, I restored my computer to a time when the speakers were working and nothing has solved the problem.  I also tried plugging headphones into the external volume control, and they didn't work either.

The only thing I can think of is that something is wrong with the sub and since everything hooks into the sub nothing works.  Could something have happened to it to cause this problem?  I also can't think of any way to test the speakers because I can't bypass the sub.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a fuse in the sub? A little black plastic cap protruding from the side. My sub has one. If so unscrew it and check if the bus fuse is blown.
