New to audiophile, need help in purchasing new headphones...

I'm going to purchase my first decent set of headphones and I need some advice.  I'm looking for headphones that cost below $200.  After some research, I've narrowed it down to Shure SRH840, Beyerdynamic DT 770-PRO, Audio Technica ATH-A900, and the Ultrasone HFI-780, but I am also welcome to other suggestions at the same price range. I mainly will be using these for music (mainly hip-hop, jazz, and classic rock) and movies.  Sound Quality is the most important for me followed my comfort as I will be using these quite often.  I already have a Fiio e10 to go with my future headphones.

Thanks in advance.

Shure SRH840, it does everything good for a their price. If your hip-hop collection is disproportionately large compared to the jazz and classic rock you might want to go Beyer DT770.

Thank you for the suggestion.  About half of my collection is hip-hop, while the other half is jazz/classic rock.  I heard that there are two versions of the the Beyerdynamic DT 770-PRO, the 80 ohm and the 250 ohm.  I believe the difference is the bass?

I suggest the HFI-780s. IMHO, the sound quality greatly out weighs the uncomfortableness that some claim is unbearable. Trust me, the headphones are a bit tight at first but once they've adjusted to your head, or you stretch them out over a box for a night, they don't feel bad at all. I listen to music 3+ hours straight too so I know. These don't need an amp, good for portability, but since you already have an e10, these will really shine.

I listen to my set with the EQ off. They are very balanced with enough bass to make me smile and feel as if I'm listening to a band live.

If you find comfort to be a problem when and IF you get these, there are some mods with different ear cushions you can do to achieve the comfort you seek.

See, if possible, if you can get your hands on couple pairs you like and try them all out before making your final decision.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, I would definitely sacrifice some comfort for sound quality and am willing to do the necessary mods to make them more comfortable.  How is the sound stage for the HFI-780s?  Also, I agree, I think the best thing for me to do right now is getting my hands on some of these headphones and try them out myself.

i suggest you to go or the Audio Technica ATH-M50 which are excllent headphones on this price range or the Ultrasone HFI-780, i personaly don't like them because of the S-Logic Technology.

I think the KRK KNS 8400 could be considered a slightly better alternative to the ATH-M50, but I'm just saying that based on what I've been reading about them.

I can't honestly recommend you any headphones myself, as I'm also trying to break my way into higher fidelity headphones.

The KRKs are much more detailed, but the bass response is on the leaner side. The bass has the volume, but is very clean and unoffensive. I personally love it, but I know there'll be some people who hear it wanting more bass. It's overall technically superior to the M50, IMO, though.

The sound stage is AmAzInG!! My aunt just tried on my 780s and she's like, "there's this voice over here, and, oh well their everywhere!" Shes not an audiophile or even a tech person in the least bit so these headphones really do amaze. Even friends I have that have tried beats at bestbuy say that these sound so much better...at everything.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I just began to do researching on the KRK KNS 8400 and it sounds like people like them.  I'll check them out!

Appreciate the answer, it does sound like they have a solid sound stage!

Well I was able to listen to the SRH840s and the DT770s at my local Guitar center.  I really liked the sound of the SRH840s and thought they sounded better than than the DT770s (my cousin did also).  Ironically, I thought the DT770s bass was a little overpowering, in the sense that it seemed to effect the sound of the mids and highs.  Although not as boomy, SRH840s had enough bass, and the mids and highs seemed more detailed and seemed to have more clarity than the DT770s.

Unfortunately, the Guitar Center did not have HFI-780s for me to try out.  I'm going to try to get my hands on them as well as the KRK KNS 8400s before I make my final decision.  In any case, does anyone have an opinion between the SRH840s, HFI-780s, and the KRK KNS 8400s?
