Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 3.6 EU volume capped

Just bought the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 3.6 PMP. Its a good PMP but the only problem is the dreaded EU volume cap. The volume only goes loud until it reaches 16 in the volume level but when I try to adjust the volume from 16 to 30 there is no difference in the volume. It just stays the same. :(

I wonder if anyone knows how to get rid of the volume cap. I selected english USA as region hoping to bypass it but it doesn't make any difference. Any ideas?

Hm, maybe a custom firmware helps? With a Galaxy S (not S+ S II etc ... only the S) I guess you should put a custom kernel in anyway, the ones with Voodoo Support, allowing you diret access to the good Wolfson DAC/Amp builtin to that phone and install the Voodoo app .... should also make listening with headphones better and allow adjustment of the amp section.

I've googled how to put a custom kernel into the Galaxy S but there doesn't seem to be any for the Galaxy S WiFi 3.6. The only ones I see is for the WiFi 4.0 and 5.0.

Duh, I confused it with the Galaxy S phone .... but since it's the series of Samsungs Audio Players, I hope it still has a Wolfson.

but if I were you, I'd just ask around in the XDA Developer forum, in the Galaxy Player 4 & 5 Section (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1419). Isn't the 3.6 exactly the same thing with just less screen size?

Yeah I hope the only difference between the 3.6, 4.0 and 5.0 is the screen size difference because I bought this PMP hoping it would have the Wolfson DAC like the 4.0 and 5.0 has.

The 5.0 has a Yamaha-DAC according to most sources and the fact that you can't 'voodoo' it

seems to support it . I don't really get what Samsung was thinking there ...

Regarding the OP :

Is the US-versions hardware identical to the Euro/Asia version ?

If so, you MAY be able to flash a US-firmware if you have a US-IP-address .

(A US-based VPN-service is probably best.

And NO, it doesn't work for iPod Classic/Nano 3G and later :(  )

Hi iam from the uk, and i have the 5.0 variant. now for me, the sound is more than loud enough and volume keeps rising until 30. maybe its a faulty unit? maybe the samsung galaxy 3.6 has a stricter volume cap? or maybe, just maybe you like you like your music LOUDL3000.gif in which case you should have a listen to the EU volume crippled Sony A845 and scream in horror. EURO!angry_face.gif

P.S What it is the screen resoultion and specs of the 3.6 variant?

Try PowerAmp, as it increases the Volume of the Player 4.0 by a whole lot.

Should probably work on the 3.6, too.

Unfortunately, I own the Sony A845 and the EU cap is awful. In saying that it isn't as bad as the EU volume capped Sony S754. Fortunately I managed to buy the new Sony A865 for only £40 from a local cash generator store. The volume on the A865 is much better than the previous Sony DAPS prior to 2009.

The resolution of the SGS Wifi 3.6 is 3.65” HVGA (480x320)

wow! i also have the A865 (great Sound) and i agree the volume is much better compared to a previous walkman i owned.

however in saying that, the samsung 5.0 wifi has, to my ears a similar level of loudness as my a865, and i am running it through it's standard music player. weird?

if i were you, i would investigate if all 3.6 players are the same in terms of 16-30 volume loudness. i dont listen to high volume music usually, but i can tell you that i got rid of the sony a845 because its volume level was too low, even for me.

or download a music app, turn the volume up, and if it stops increasing after 16, then it definetly could be a faulty player.

I mentioned the problem I was having with my SGS wifi 3.6 on the ABI forum and they were telling me even though they don't own the 3.6 version that it sounds like the dreaded EU volume cap. I bought PowerAMP and EQualizer from Android Marketplace and what a difference the sound is. The sound is a bit louder than Samsungs stock player and with EQualizer and PowerAMP playing at the same time the SQ is awesome. The sound is on par with my A865.

I tested my SGS wifi 3.6 using just the built in speaker and the volume gets louder when I adjust it from level 16 to 30. However when I use my earphones the volume doesn't get louder from level 16 to 30. This is weird.

I did a factory reset on my SGS wifi 3.6 and selected English (United Kingdom) and tried the built in songs with earphones. Now when I raise the volume from 16 to 30 it now slightly gets louder but not loud that my ears are screaming.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 and have the Voodoo App installed thanks to a custom kernel and the SQ is amazing, does the 3.6 use the Wolfson DAC.

I don't know if the wifi3.6 uses the Wolfson DAC. I asked on this forum but didn't get a reply so I assumed know one knows.

Anyway, I don't know whether to send the unit back to my local electrical store and ask for a replacement. I did further testing last night. I played a mp3 track at 16 on the volume level then I raised the volume right up to the max 30. I heard no difference in the volume then I paused the track for a second and then played it again and I noticed a huge difference. The volume was loud. This is very strange. I don't know if this is a software problem or a hardware problem.
