trying to really get into hi-fi - advice on my current equip & future setup please

hey guys. long time etymotic listener here (pardon the screenname haha..) and i am looking to take my listening to the next level.

i used a pair of etymotic ER6 IEMs for a few years playing them from several mp3 players including a samsung YP-T7JZ and an ipod touch and was pretty happy with them. when they got plagued by static i got a pair of ER6i's since the ER6's were no longer being produced. those are my current IEMs. the only method for portable music listening i have now is my phone (htc evo).

this past christmas i was fortunate enough to get a headroom total airhead amplifier. hooking this up i have noticed a difference in the general clarity and subtle details of my music. however the change is not leaps and bounds different. i can now hear interference from my phone that goes away if i put it in airplane mode to prevent any data transmissions which kind of defeats the purpose of it being a phone since it is unusable in that regard in airplane mode.

based on my research and some things i have read here i am looking at a Sansa clip mp3 player and playing FLAC files on it exclusively. as my ER6i's are starting to get some static in one channel, i am looking at getting the ety hf5's or the ER-4X's, which i am still doing additional research on.

any advice on my plans? i have read the sansa is an excellent piece of hardware, albeit a simple device. using FLAC seems like a no brainer to me but if anyone has any recommendations i would appreciate it. lastly i have read several threads on IEMs here but they are all brands i have never heard of, or are super expensive. thanks!

The Sansa Clip+ gives you the best bang for the buck if you want a cheap player with expandable memory, decent sound, and lossless support. It's also supported by Rockbox, which is a great bonus. It's highly regarded in Head-Fi and other audio enthusiast forums.

IMO the factors affecting the listening experience are (in order of importance) 1. Headphones 2. Source File 3. Audio Source 4. Amp

Since you're having trouble with your headphones, it makes more sense to replace them before you deal with the audio source.

welp, went ahead and got me a sansa clip+ and a new pair of ety hf5's. after reading this review: http://www.head-fi.org/t/391551/the-etymotic-hf5-its-new-its-etymotic-but-is-it-good-work-in-progress-review#post5145969, a little ways down by synaesthetic, i feel confident that i will like them. got a recertified black 4GB sansa on newegg for $24 and a pair of blue (cobalt, whatever) hf5's on amazon for $104 tax included. i'm pretty happy with my shopping and looking forward to the new setup. going from an interference laden source with totally varying bitrate music files and a static plagued er6i setup to a sansa clip+ playing FLAC files to an amp that powers brand new hf5's. i'm hoping for a big improvement.
