Bass Question... Audio-Technica ATHM50S vs Ultrasone HFI-780 - Page 2

Weird.  I found the M50s to be boring, and my experience with the 780s was that they were very punchy.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I feel the same about the pro 550's.  Slightly less bass than the 580's, but we're talking about 2-3db, not -10

I've found time and again that the Headroom frequency response graph measurements don't match what I and others are hearing.

So I've decided, reluctantly, to no longer consider them as a factor in my headphone evaluations.

I used to own the ATH-M50 and currently my all round headphones are the HFI-780 (and looking to upgrade to the PRO 900 ph34r.gif). In my opinion the ATH-M50 has a deeper bass and maybe more detailed, but it isn't that present in the music. It's more of a clinical bass: look, here is a perfect 70Hz tone! But the bass isn't musical, there is little impact. The HFI-780 do not swim in bass, but they aren't shy of it at all either. Probably slightly bassier than neutral phones would be. But their bass is very musical and fun, so I'd pick the HFI-780 over the ATH-M50 every day.

Much more bassier than neutral headphone, imo :) I don't know if you have already tested a flat headphone, but bass aren't so emphasized.

Effectively HFi580 is much more punchy and have more bass quantity.

I definitely agree; the HFI-780's have significantly more bass than neutral headphones.

And top too, for that matter.

( (I own a pair & like them a lot, but not for all types of music.)

Great point.

I am starting to think that between the ATHM50S and HFI 580 and 780's, the 780's I am going to keep regardless. I'd say the majority of the stuff I listen to sounds great on them. I am pleased to have found something that is for sure.

I am still debating the other two though. It's not easy letting go.
