I've been using one of those Music Hall MMF CD-25's now for almost 10 years and have really enjoyed it but when I started to think about upgrading my phones to something better, currently HD600's I wondered if maybe my source could be a bottleneck if I go much higher up the headphone scale. Plus I've heard that the HD600's do scale up quite well so should I be thinking of a source upgrade before I go further up the headphone food chain? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

I assume that you've ruled out a $750 replacement headphone cable, and still have your sanity.
It sounds like you have been enjoying your CD player and your amp, why not pick up a DAC like the Lyr-matching Bifrost and see if it improves your MMF CD-25? The big bonus is if you enjoy computer audio, then get the USB option.
For myself, I really enjoy my HD600 out of the Matrix Mini-i DAC's built-in headphone amp, great synergy there. It has balanced analog outputs but its USB implementation really needs help.

There will definitely be no cable upgrades in my future. Just something never been interested in. I know this is subjective but would the Bifrost DAC sound better then what is in my current cd player? I just want to make sure that when I do get newer headphones that my source isn't holding back the phones to much. I don't generally listen to music off of my laptop but having a separate DAC would probably get me more interested in listening to music off of it then I am now.

I have no idea which would be a better DAC, but it could be fun to find out and to explore computer-based music as well.
For a headphone upgrade, there is the new HD700 coming out in 2-3 months, @U$ 999.
