Well, not much cheaper- $197.80 vs. $199.99. Though you do have to pay the sales tax at Radio Shack.

If you're right about the M50s sounding lifeless, then I worry that they may be a tad too flat for me.  Too bad, because after the Grados, I was really itching for something circumaural.

Sounds like you should try the Sony V6. It is a neutral professional headphone. It is circumaural on some people. You might want to also try the Sony Zx700 or 7510.

Yeah, and now I realize that I can get them at headphone.com for $179.99 with the 10% discount for Head-Fiers.

Where can you demo the HD-25 / M50? Guitar center?

In terms of build quality and isolation, the HD 25 demolishes the M50, no questions asked.

In terms of comfort and sound quality, I prefer the M50 over the HD 25.

Personally, I would try all three before making a decision.

HD25 all the way

I listen to everything, rock, psytrance, techno, classical, pop - and the Sennheisers are good in all genres. Consider this - after listening to the HD25 for a while, the HD650 sound thin. It takes a while for me to adjust back to the HD650 sound.

Plus these will never break on you.

I haven't tried the m80, but I can be sure that the hd25 won't disappoint you.

Well, as much as I want to buy headphones NOW, it looks like I'll have to wait until at least March.  Judging by what Tyll at innerfidelity said, it looks like the new HD25 (Amperior) is going to be pretty amazing.  Plus, with the M-100 coming out in February, I think I'd kick myself for buying something now and then having their possibly better replacements/counterparts out one month afterwards.

I have Grados and bought the M80s but think they're too boomy for me.  I also have some Shure SE215s which I think are considered bass-heavy and don't have that issue with those.  (I know it's not a fair comparison--IEMs to on-ears.)

I honestly don't know what to think. I really wanted to like these but I'm afraid I'm going to have to look elsewhere. I want a balanced, full sound, and to me these fall more in the basshead category.  This review, I think, sums up my feelings better than most. On some songs they sound awesome but then on others it's too much.  There's great bass extension and detail, and on tracks where they shine I absolutely love them.  They're well-built, look great, and feel like they'd take a beating.  The lesson more and more for me is that I need to listen to things personally and not rely on reviews.

I wish we still lived in an era where there were local hifi shops where this were possible.  Good luck with your search, Jeff

Alright, so how about the SRH940s?  I love me some clarity and detail and these certainly seem to fit the bill.

I got to listen to the Shure headphones today at Guitar Center and I have to say that I was kind of blown away.  I can get them on headphones.com for only 229, which seems like a steal to me.

I can't imagine the other two options making me any more happy than these did.

skyline,

i'm replying to your thread here after you commented on my M80/v80 comments in the vmoda thread...i think you're right, the m/v80 sound is just not for me i'm afraid even though i love the look and design of the phones quite a bit. And they are extremely uncomfortable on my ears, even for minutes, much less hours.

I'll add a few comments on the 940's for you too: yes, they are extremely detailed, accurate, and comfortable. However, even though the bass is def. extended and well-controlled, i do find them a little thin-sounding for just casual music listening, particulary straight from a portable device (non-amped--they do open up more with more power). Have you actually heard the ATm50s? Despite others' comments, i would say they are still some of the best sounding cans out there, particularly for the price. They may have a very slight mid-bass increase, but not in any way boomy in my opinion. i find them more enjoyable or "funner" to listen to music with than the 940s actually, and the bass is MUCH more impactful without bloating. I'd say they are slightly warmer sounding while still being pretty accurate as well. The mids may be a bit more recessed than the 940, but still very good, and the highs are amazing--air, sparkle, no sibilance or grating treble. i've had the m50s for years though, and have hundreds of hours of experience with them. The 940s sound thin in direct comparison in a sid-by-side A-B test. The m80s are very MR forward in comparison to the 2 others, and definitely lack high-end sparkle and detail, and in my experience the bass is very good with some sources, but not as good with others--and much less smooth overall than the m50s or 940s.

i agree that i wish i had a place to audition all of these products for personal evaluation before purchase--dont like to send stuff back if i dont like it, doesnt seem right to me. But the v-80s are just not for me i'm afraid. Hope i could help you with your decision some too, if you havent made it yet. ;)

Have you heard the Senn HD25s yourself yet? i may be considering them for the v80 replacement myself, or wait and try the vmoda100's when they surface.
