So I am in desperate need of some headsets. My old ones no longer work (cheapies from woot.com) but I haven't done much (VOIP) gaming to warrant buying new ones. Until now. I need some headsets for a LAN coming up and if I want to starting VOIPing more.

Mostly @ my desktop I listen to my music/games through my TA-AX295 amp and Phasetech speakers (not sure of model, but they sound great) I have a x-fi platinum sound card. Music is across the board but for sure pretty heavy on stuff like Led Zeppelin or The Mars Volta. Like Blues/Jazz too.

If I am portable, I use either cheapie earbuds or my DIY custom-molded in-ear Shure headphones. But it might look cool to be sporting some big cans?

I've done some searches and am looking at these three options basically:

  • Corsair CA-HS1ANA Gaming Audio Series HS1 Analog Gaming Headset (no idea on how these compare sq-wise)

  • Samson SR850 + Zalman Zm-Mic1

  • Grado Prestige Series SR-60i + Zalman Zm-Mic1 (concerned about comfort, largish head and my ears aren't exactly aero)

Insights or suggestions? Don't want to spend more than $100.

I personally don't like to use my SR-60i's for gaming.  The soundstage is too close in for first person shooters.  Not that I do much of that anymore.  Their sound is made for rock though, so they would fit your musical preferences.

The Samson would probably be a better choice for the gaming side, but aren't really portable if you need that as well.

There are some other good choices in the $100 range.  Creative Aurvana Live!, KRK 6400, Shure 440, Sony MDR V6 and Koss DJ100 are common recommendations around here.

went with Creative Aurvana Live! because they were on sale for like $55.

Thanks!
