Looking for a good pair of large headphones

Hey guys,

This is my first post on here, so here it goes.

I am looking for a pair of headphones, large over the ear ones.  in the price range of below $250.

I listen to mostly orchestral music/ wind band music, but I also listen to other genres such as pop and modern day music and whatnot.

I want headphones that are very comfortable and have a mostly even treble and bass, but a slightly stronger bass.

I don't want it to be bass heavy though.  I also do not want them to leak sound.  I also want it to have a full sound if you know what I mean.  Like a resonant sound that seems like I am listening to a live performance.

Any suggestions can help and I am willing to clarify anything if necessary.  Thanks in advance!

Maybe SRH840 or/and HFi780 ll be good for your needs. But sincerely, its hard to find a closed headphone very comfortable with also a good isolation. Good isolation means a stronger clamping force.

Being a huge Audio Technica fan boy, I'll be the first to bring up the fact that they're well respected when it comes with orchestral and female vocalist styles of music. You may be interested in looking at the AT-AD900's which are open air dynamic type headphones, but if you're looking for isolation the closed version of the headphone the A900's may suit you but from what I've experienced I prefer orchestral on open air type headphones.

I've found the Fischer Audio FA-003 great at orchestral music, but it's neutral headphone, meaning that the no range is louder than any other. The bass on the FA-003 is actually very good, it's just not louder than anything else. It is, however, punchy and very nicely done and doesn't drown out anything else, which is important in large-ensemble music. The soundstage (the width and depth of the sound presentation) is nearly unrivaled by any other closed headphone in the price range, and aspect that is also extremely important to orchestral music as well as everything else. If you're willing to go with a bass-capable can instead of a bass-tilted can, they'd be a great choice for classical. IMO, bass-heavy headphones under $300 or so never did much for my neoclassical and theatrical songs, so you may be disappointed by a bassy headphone in this price range.

Sincerely,

What do you guys think about the AT-M50 for my purpose?

M50 is not really suited for your needs.

Yeah, while the M50 is a bit bassy and fits that prerequisite, it really doesn't perform well with orchestral music. Trust me, I have over 1200+ hours on mine and can't stand to listen to my Olafur Arnalds, Johann Johannsen, Clint Mansell, and more traditional compositions on it.

is there anything not mentioned already that would match my prerequisite?

Yeah the M50's are a great bang for your buck, and if you listened to more contemporary music than classical I'd say go for it, but you're much better off with AD900's. That is, unless you plan on leaving the house with'm. Then you're in a different boat.

Get the Fischer Audio FA-003/Brainwavz HM5 Pro/Lindy Premium and EQ or amp the bass up when needed?

I will mention that they will be taken outside often, so for my purposes, a closed set would be good, and I will mention I do not have an amp or sound card.

I know i repeat myself, lol, but HFi780 ll be very good for your needs. Portable (two cables), very good SQ with excellent bass, very good isolation...

Usually "large" and outside don't go hand and hand. Pehaps look at some ESW9s?
