Audiophile NOOB HERE! Need HELP!!

Hey Guys and Gals,

As per the title, I am new to the world of audiophile headphones. I just bought a new laptop and please don't blast me on my selection. I'll list the specs of the laptop and what music I am into primarily. I just need a great pair of closed headphones that will fit over my ears and provide great sound. I used to ride the Monster Beats Pro bandwagon but after reading so many stories on here, I decided the join the forum and abandon my pursuit of the Beats Pro's.

So onto the laptop. I decided to buy an HP Envy 15 laptop with the following customized specs.

Envy 15
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2760QM Processor (2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.5 GHz)
• 1GB Discrete Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, DP]
• 6GB 1600DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
• No Additional Office Software
• 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
• 15.6-inch diagonal Radiance Full HD Infinity LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
• SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
• HP TrueVision HD Webcam
• Intel 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R) with Wireless Display Support
• Full-size Radiance backlit keyboard
• Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) Elements 9 & Adobe Premiere(R) Elements 9
• 2 year limited warranty included
• HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

The reason I post this is because I listen to music on my laptop mainly. Hip hop, R and B, and Progressive house is what I listen to so headphones that are catered to that kind of music would be of great help. Price range anything under $500 please.

Side Note: I will be getting Fiio's headphone amps...really between E9/E7, E9/E10, or when it comes out E9/E17

Thanks guys for your help. If there's any advice out there, I'll gladly take it.

How important is bass to you? I'm going to assume you want err towards more bass, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. In that case, then I've got these suggestions (ordered by descending price):

Denon AH-D5000

Ultrasone Pro 750

Beyerdynamic DT-770

Sony MDR-XB700

Audiotechnica ATH-M50

Some more balanced sounding headphones in my opinion in the <$300 range:

AKG 271 MK-II

Shure SRH-440

Sennheiser HD-280

Sony MDR-V6

Note that you'll most likely need a dedicated DAC and amp to go with most of those headphones. I probably missed quite a few, but that list should give you a good start.

Edit: Also, the Envy comes with some Beats audio software, which I think just uses DSP filters to apply equalization (as far as I know of). I haven't messed with this in person, so I can't vouch for how good or bad it is.

Thanks, I like a good solid bass sound almost similar to the clean bass you'd feel if in a house or hip hop concert when standing at a good distance. I think next to the bass levels that won't drown out the mids and highs, comfort is big because I literally was a click away from ordering the Beats Pros until I came here and found out they were more on ear than over the ear and the clamping pressure made listening for prolonged periods of time very uncomfortable. I've seen some with really big ear cups but they tend to be open headphones...i know my specifications might be picky but after buying a computer as previously named, I want very good headphones knowing that I will purchase DAC and Headphone amp most likely from the Fiios line of products

Second on the Ultrasone Pro 900 and get the E7/E9 since you probably have onboard sound.

Thanks guys...I had never looked into the Ultrasone Pro 900's and they honestly look amazing. Is there anyone who has them that can comment about their sound quality and comfort?
