I did pair my AKG K701 with a Schiit Valhalla, but I didn’t like the results. The Beyerdynamic DT 990/600 Ω match the Schiit Valhalla much better, and the Beyerdynamic T1 plus the Schiit Valhalla raised my listening joy to a complete new level. In my opinion the AKG K701 and all of their variants and siblings are not very pleasing headphones, to say the least.

And they are a pain on the head due to their headbands.

If closed can is alright for you, definitely give the Shure SRH 940 a try. To me it's much more musical. More bass presence yet it's tight and accurate. IMO even more detailed and clarity than the 701. And the soundstage, though not wider, has a really accurate spatial reproduction that rivals the HD800 in some ways (HD800 still better of course).

I highly suggest you audition it :)

That's interesting. Can you describe what makes them sound more musical? Are the mids fuller...richer...more weighty? I found the 702 mids too light and airy... diffuse sounding.  Not trying to hijack this thread, but since the OP was looking for a more musical alternative to the 70X, I figure it's relevant.

The HD650 is my choice as well. I replaced the K701 with it, and never looked back.

Get a Darkvoice 337 to drive the HD650 and in addition to "never looking back" you'll probably "never think back" to the K701, either.  : )

Bumping this thread again tongue_smile.gif

Haven't bought any new cans yet, but I think I'm going with either a pair of DT990/600Ohm or a pair of AH-D2000.

Though one thing that makes me a bit sceptical about both these cans is that they're supposed to have slighty recessed mids. Although I've read several claim that the D2000 still do really well with vocals, which is definitely a big plus.

Some say that the mids on AH-D5000 are better and a bit more prominent, is this true? And are the AH-D5000's in that case really worth the extra money?

D2000/D5000 seem to be very good allround-cans and work well with almost all types of music, which would really suite me normal_smile%20.gif

The only thing I think I'd sometimes miss from my K701's if I got a pair of Denon's is the big soundstage. That's why I'm also looking at the DT990 as they're supposed to have a big soundstage as well.

I'd love some opinions on all this! tongue_smile.gif
