Don't even THINK of using HD650s as a portable headphones, they are simply not meant to do that. But if you are using it for home use, I would recommend getting a Fiio E9 for it as suggested by the others. If you need portables, I would like you to consider V-Moda M80/V80 as an alternative or DT1350.

Well, hopefully it works out well for you! I do understand the hassle of living out in the sticks. I wasn't trying to attack your decision, just hoping that you realize you're getting into something *very* different.

If the HD 650 don't work out for you, the E9 will still be very suitable for more or less any other dynamic headphone you'd like to consider - including things like the Denons, various Ultrasone, Beyerdynamic, AKG, and so on products as well. So at least that's a "win" more or less no matter what. I'm not sure how it would handle orthodynamics, but the TI chip in there can provide quite a bit of power into low impedance loads. Should at least "work."

Out of curiosity, what will you be plugging all of that into? If you'd still like to use an iPod, there is a version of the E9 which features an iDevice dock (it's called the E9i; I know, not very clever).

I have to go by what people say in the reviews to make my decision, and I feel that the sound of the 650's would best suit my tastes of music. I believe that I will buy the 650's with a FiiO E9.

Well on the Zune HD I have the volume set to 20 (out of 30) and it's darned loud. Yes there is audible clipping the louder you push the phones but I mean the HD600 and HD650 are not as dependent on an amp as many say. At least from my experience that is. The HD600 still sounds really good out of the Zune HD, but rather terrible from my 7 year old Ipod Mini. The Mini clips so much. t gets well beyond loud and clips like mad. The sound is still rather bad.

It was horrible with the iPod (audible clipping) and while I liked it with the ZenMX, it was at full volume and I only got 1 hour out a fully-charged battery.

If you don't need to be completely portable, I'd also have to say the e9 is a better bet.  You may be able to listen to 650's without an amp but you still should have one.
