Looking for new hi-fi headphones, advice welcome

Thread Starter

Hey guys,

Im looking for a high definition headphone with around $400 in budget

I listen to jazz blues rock and electro at moderate volumes on ipod/pc and these
would be my requirements with % representing how much they are important to me

Open back: 90% : something with not tremendeous leak at moderate volume
Velvet pad : 90% : pleather just gets irritating
All around ears : 100% : anything else gets incomfortable after a while
Cord: preferably interchangeable, <3m, 3.5mm terminated
Solid design: 80% : it's a considerable investment and want it to last
Nice look: 70% : cool looks are a bonus
Inline volume / mic : 20% : nice bonus to have but not necessary
Audio response: overall excellent with slight emphasis on bass but not as much as drdremonsters=headache
<80 ohm impedance: 100% : i dont plan on using a dac amp

Some candidates were
Audio technica ath ad 900 1000
Sennheiser hd598
Beyer dt 880-32

Any comments or suggestions? :-)

Sennheiser HD650

Denon AHD2000

Ultrasone Pro 2900-$450

paired with an FiiO E11 amp for a ttoal of $400..other than the ultrasone's the sennheisers and denon's are $350.

All 3 are very popular contendors and more or less fit exactly what you are looking for. pads are of course changgable.

You need an amp period. a lot of new head fiers come and say no amp. they just don't get that these need amps(the ahd 2000's not so much but will still benefit) the FiiO E11 is a strong cheap amp contendor

I'll second the recommendations for the Ultrasone Pro 2900 and Denon AH-D2000.  Since I preferred the D2000 to the HD600, and preferred the HD600 to the HD650, I won't second the recommendation for the HD650, though.  : )

Well some head fi'ers seem to like the HD600 over the HF650..not a large population of them though. Oh this was just a comment to let the OP know.
